Chapter 12 - The Healing of Four Little Hearts-12

Spring came late to the Rocky Mountains, but when it arrived, it transformed the Aspen estate into an explosion of vibrant, green life.
The snow melted from the high meadows, giving way to blankets of wild blue columbines, yellow sunflowers, and lush alpine grass. The cold, forbidding atmosphere that had once hung over the mansion was replaced by open windows, warm mountain breezes, and the constant sound of birdsong.
I completely remodeled the east wing of the house—the wing where Vanessa had thrown her wild, destructive parties.
The cold marble floors were replaced with warm, reclaimed oak planks. The grand dining room where she had stood spraying champagne was converted into an expansive, sunlit art studio and music room filled with child-sized easels, grand pianos, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Every morning began with a grand family breakfast in the kitchen.
My daughters had regained their healthy, vibrant energy. Their cheeks were plump and rosy, their laughter constant and infectious. They had grown two inches over the spring, their small bodies thriving under love, proper nutrition, and unyielding security.
One Saturday afternoon in May, while we were sitting in the meadow behind the house picking wildflowers, Emma walked up to me carrying a large sketchbook.
"Daddy," she said softly, sitting down on the grass beside me. "I drew something for you."
I laid my book down and smiled at her. "Let me see, sweetheart."
She turned the page of her sketchbook.
It was a beautifully detailed colored-pencil drawing of our house on the mountain. Standing in front of the house were six figures holding hands: me in the center, my four little girls surrounding me, and above us in the bright blue sky, a gentle, glowing figure with golden wings and a bright smile.
Claire.
Beneath the drawing, written in Emma’s neat, careful handwriting, were five words:
Our House is Safe Now.
Tears filled my eyes—not tears of sorrow or grief, but tears of deep, overwhelming gratitude. I pulled Emma into my lap, pressing a kiss against her soft hair, holding her close against my chest.
"It is beautiful, Emma," I choked out, my voice thick with emotion. "It's the most beautiful drawing I've ever seen."
Lily, Sophie, and Grace came running across the meadow, their arms full of bright yellow flowers, laughing as they tumbled onto the grass beside us.
"Look, Daddy!" Lily squealed, handing me a woven crown of dandelion blossoms. "We made a king crown for you!"
I set the flower crown upon my head, making a grand, theatrical bow that sent all four of them into fits of breathless giggling.
"A king must have his princesses," I declared, picking up Grace and Sophie and spinning them around in the warm sunshine while Emma and Lily chased our golden retriever across the green grass.
As I spun beneath the wide blue sky, I looked up at the sun shining over the mountain peaks.

I could feel Claire’s presence in the warm breeze, in the rustle of the pine trees, and in the bright, joyful eyes of our four little girls.
We had survived the dark night. We had defeated the wolves at our gates. And now, the sun was shining brightly over our home.
