Chapter 5 - The Poison in the Diamond Necklace-5

I descended the grand staircase with deliberate, measured steps.

The heavy steel security shutters blocking the ballroom entrance hissed as I entered my master override code into the wall terminal. The iron gates slid slowly upward, revealing the dark, ruined room inside.

Vanessa was sitting on the edge of a velvet lounge sofa, shivering uncontrollably in her tiny silver dress. The room was freezing, illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through the high arching windows. Her mascara was smeared down her cheeks, her expensive diamond necklace sparkling incongruously against her pale, bruised skin.

When she heard the steel gates rise, she jumped up, clutching her hands together in a desperate posture of surrender.

"Nathan!" she gasped, taking a trembling step toward me. "The police... I heard helicopters outside! You have to tell them I was forced into this! You have to tell them I’m your wife!"

I stood in the doorway, my arms crossed over my chest, watching her like an entomologist observing a specimen pinned to a board.

"You're not my wife, Vanessa," I said quietly. "Your legal marriage certificate was registered under the name Vanessa Miller. But your real name is Vanessa Rostova, born in Odesa, trained in Vienna, and placed on the payroll of Voronin International in 2019."

Vanessa froze. The theatrical panic on her face vanished, replaced by an eerie, cold composure. She slowly stood up straight, wiping the smeared mascara from beneath her eyes with the back of her hand.

"So," she said, her voice dropping its soft, breathless inflection, replaced by a flat, hardened accent. "The genius billionaire finally solved the puzzle. It took you long enough, Nathan."

"I was blinded by grief, Vanessa," I admitted openly. "I was a grieving husband looking for solace, and you played your role brilliantly. You smiled at my daughters, you pretended to love my home, and you waited patiently for three years while your handlers prepared the extraction plan."

Vanessa chuckled—a bitter, hollow sound. "Love those bratty little girls? They were a nightmare, Nathan. Four identical little ghosts running around this dreary house, looking at me with Claire's pathetic gray eyes. Do you have any idea how exhausting it was to pretend to care about their school drawings and their silly lullabies?"

My jaw clenched, but I remained motionless. "So when I left for Frankfurt, you decided to drop the act."

"I didn't have a choice!" she snapped, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "The syndicate was losing patience! The federal indictment against our European holdings was closing in, and Voronin needed your quantum encryption core to wipe our offshore accounts before the SEC froze them! I was ordered to clear the house and secure the vault by Christmas Day!"

"And starving my five-year-old daughters was part of the plan?"

"It was efficient!" she hissed, taking a step closer, her voice laced with venom. "They were loud! They kept asking when you were coming home! They kept crying for their dead mother! So I put them where they couldn't be heard. I gave them enough food to keep their hearts beating. That's more than they deserved!"

I looked at her, feeling a strange, profound sense of clarity. The anger inside me didn't evaporate; it condensed into something hard, cold, and permanent.

"Do you know what this necklace is, Vanessa?" I asked, pointing to the glittering diamond collar around her throat.

She instinctively reached up, touching the heavy platinum chain. "It’s a three-hundred-thousand-dollar Harry Winston necklace you bought me for our anniversary."

"No," I corrected her softly. "It’s a custom piece I designed in Zurich. I didn't buy it from a jeweler. I manufactured it in my company’s bio-tech lab."

Vanessa’s hand froze against her neck. Her eyes widened with sudden, primal dread. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Inside the central pendant—the large, teardrop-shaped diamond resting over your collarbone—is a micro-encapsulated transdermal delivery chip," I explained smoothly, walking toward her. "It’s connected to my company’s secure satellite grid. For eighteen months, that necklace has been recording your heart rate, your location, your vocal stress levels, and every conversation you held within five feet of it."

Vanessa gasped, frantically reaching behind her neck to unhook the clasp. Her fingers fumbled with the tiny platinum latch, but her hands were trembling too violently to catch the pin.

"Get it off me!" she screamed, tugging wildly at the chain, leaving red scratches along her fair skin. "Get it off me!"

"It doesn't contain poison, Vanessa," I said quietly, stopping three feet away from her. "I am not a murderer like your handlers. But it does contain a GPS transponder that has been broadcasting your precise location to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Interpol Red Notice task force, and the Swiss Federal Police since 8:00 PM tonight."

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom were suddenly kicked open.

Special Agent Marcus Reed stepped into the room, flanked by six heavily armed federal tactical officers with shields and automatic carbines.

"Vanessa Rostova," Reed’s voice boomed through the freezing hall. "You are under arrest for treason, corporate espionage, child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the death of Claire Caldwell."

Vanessa dropped to her knees on the marble floor. Her hands fell away from the diamond necklace, her eyes staring blankly at the floor as the tactical officers moved in, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel restraints around her wrists.

As they pulled her to her feet and began escorting her past me, she stopped for a fraction of a second, looking into my eyes.

"You think you won, Nathan?" she whispered, her voice raspy and broken. "Voronin will never let you live. He knows you have the files. He will come for you, and he will come for those four little girls."

May you like

I looked at her, my face as unreadable as stone.

"Let him come, Vanessa," I said softly. "He killed my wife, and he tried to destroy my children. I’ve been waiting three years for him to come."
