Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT DEPARTURE

-5-

The private aviation hangar at the municipal airport was bathed in the harsh, sterile glare of halogen overhead lamps. Outside, a freezing autumn rain had begun to lash against the corrugated metal walls, drumming a relentless, erratic rhythm that mirrored the frantic beating of Amanda’s heart.

Parked on the tarmac was Richard’s sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream private jet, its turbine engines idling with a deep, vibrating drone that rattled the teeth in her skull.

Amanda sat in the leather passenger seat of Richard’s bulletproof Mercedes sedan as it glided across the wet tarmac, coming to a halt directly at the base of the mobile airstairs. Leo was sleeping restlessly in his car seat in the back, exhausted from hours of crying and the overwhelming stress of the day. His breathing was heavy, punctuated by soft, pathetic sniffling sounds that twisted a knife in Amanda’s chest with every intake of air.

Richard killed the engine. He didn't get out immediately. Instead, he turned his head, staring at Amanda with those cold, calculating hazel eyes that had deceived her for four long years.

"Remember our agreement, Amanda," Richard said, his voice quiet, steady, and laden with chilling implication. "You are my devoted, loving wife. The moment we land in Maine, we begin our new, uninterrupted family life. No looking back. No second thoughts."

"I remember," Amanda replied, keeping her voice flat, devoid of emotion, carefully hiding the heavy panic clawing at her throat.

Deep inside the cavernous pocket of her cardigan, her fingers wrapped tightly around Richard’s encrypted corporate smartphone. Throughout the forty-minute drive from the estate to the airport, while Richard had been focused on the road, she had used his own thumbprint—pressed stealthily against the home button while he steered with one hand—to unlock the device.

She hadn't just looked at text messages or emails. She had opened the master remote terminal app that linked directly to the server racks in his locked study. With three swift taps, she had initiated an automated, encrypted data transfer of every single experiment file, audio log, and surveillance video straight to a secure cloud server owned by an elite cyber-crimes unit in Washington, D.C.—a unit commanded by her estranged brother, Marcus, an FBI special agent she hadn't spoken to in five years, but who had answered her frantic midnight text with three simple words: Send me everything.

The transfer had completed just as they pulled through the airport gates.

"Let's go," Richard commanded, opening his door and stepping out into the freezing rain.

He rounded the car, opened the back door, and unbuckled Leo from his car seat, scooping the sleeping toddler into his arms. Amanda stepped out behind them, the cold rain instantly soaking through her hair and clinging to her clothes, but she barely felt it. Her entire body was operating on pure, razor-sharp adrenaline.

They climbed the mobile airstairs into the warm, leather-lined cabin of the private jet. The pilot and co-pilot sat in the cockpit, their backs turned, running through pre-flight checklist protocols.

Richard strapped himself into a leather seat near the front, holding Leo securely in his lap. He gestured for Amanda to sit opposite him.

"Strap in, Amanda," Richard said, a tight, triumphant smile touching his lips. "We’re leaving the noise behind."

Amanda sank into the plush leather seat, pulling the seatbelt across her chest and clicking it into place. As the jet’s cabin doors sealed shut with a heavy, pressurized hiss, she reached slowly into her pocket.

She pulled out Richard’s phone.

She didn't try to hide it. She held it up right in front of her face, catching his attention with a cold, deliberate flick of her wrist.

Richard’s smile vanished instantly. His hazel eyes widened in sudden, absolute horror as he recognized the matte-black casing of his master terminal device.

"What... what are you holding?" Richard whispered, half-rising from his seat, his grip tightening instinctively around Leo.

"Your life's work, Richard," Amanda said, her voice ringing out clear, steady, and utterly devoid of fear above the roar of the idling turbine engines.

Before Richard could lunge across the aisle to snatch the phone from her hand, the cabin door of the jet banged open behind them.

The sound of heavy boots echoed down the narrow carpeted aisle.

Richard whipped his head around. Stepping into the cabin, water dripping from their tactical rain gear and automatic rifles held at the ready, were four federal agents—led by a tall, broad-shouldered man with grim, unrelenting eyes.

Marcus Howard. Her brother.

Marcus stepped past the trembling co-pilot, locked his gaze onto Richard, and raised his badge high.

"Richard Howard, you are under arrest for federal child endangerment, psychological torture, and corporate espionage," Marcus announced, his voice booming through the cabin. "It's over, Richard. The cavalry has arrived."
