Chapter 15 - THE HORIZON OF TOMORROW

-15-

The sun dipped below the distant Green Mountains, painting the evening sky in magnificent strokes of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The Vermont farmhouse glowed with a warm, welcoming light from every window, a beacon of safety and enduring love nestled in the heart of the valley.

Inside, the kitchen was quiet. Leo was fast asleep upstairs in his bedroom, his breathing soft and rhythmic, clutching his favorite stuffed animal after a long day of running through the orchard.

Amanda sat at the wooden dining table, a single desk lamp illuminating her sketchbook as she put the finishing touches on a detailed botanical illustration of a blooming apple branch—a symbol of new life rising from deep roots.

Marcus walked in from the mudroom, hanging his barn jacket on the peg and pouring a final glass of water. He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down, watching her draw with a quiet, approving smile.

"You're still working?" Marcus asked softly.

"Just finishing up," Amanda replied, not looking up from the paper. She added one final stroke of green to a leaf before setting her pencil down and closing the sketchbook with a soft thump.

She leaned back in her chair, looking across the table at her brother. "Do you ever look back, Marcus? Do you ever think about what would have happened if we hadn't made it out of that house?"

Marcus’s expression turned serious, the playful banter completely vanishing from his eyes. He reached across the table, placing his hand over hers. "Addie, we don't need to look back, because we won. You beat him at his own game—not with his cold, calculated cruelty, but with your courage, your instincts, and your heart."

Amanda smiled, turning her hand over to interlace her fingers with his. "You're right. We won."

She stood up from the table, walking over to the large front window that looked out over the sprawling lawn, the apple orchard, and the endless horizon of the Vermont hills stretching into the dark.

The stars were out, shining with a sharp, brilliant clarity in the crisp night air. There were no hidden cameras out there. No server racks humming in the dark. No monsters waiting in the shadows.

There was only the quiet, beautiful promise of tomorrow.

Amanda rested her palm gently against the cool glass of the window, taking a deep, steady breath of the peaceful night. The cage was broken, the chains were gone, and the horizon was wide open.
