Chapter 14 - THE unshakeable foundation

-14-
As the second anniversary of their escape from Manhattan approached, the Vermont farmhouse felt more like an eternal home than a temporary refuge. The apple trees in the orchard yielded a bumper crop of sweet, crisp fruit, and the community around them had embraced Amanda and Leo not as refugees from a tabloid scandal, but as cherished neighbors and friends.
It was a crisp Saturday morning in late October. Amanda sat on the front porch with a cup of hot herbal tea, watching the morning mist burn off the rolling hills.
Marcus walked out of the house carrying two mugs of black coffee, handing one to her before leaning against the porch railing. "You know, Addie, the U.S. Attorney’s office called me yesterday. They’re officially closing the Howard Foundation asset liquidation files. Everything has been distributed, resolved, and audited. The chapter is permanently closed."
Amanda took a slow sip of her tea, letting the warmth spread through her chest. "Good. I haven't thought about the Howard name in months."
"Because you're too busy building a real legacy," Marcus said, gesturing toward the orchard where local families were already arriving to pick apples for the weekend market. "You built this entire community hub from scratch, and it runs like clockwork."
"We built it, Marcus. Not just me," Amanda corrected him gently. "You, me, Leo, and this town. We survived because we refused to let the darkness win."
Just then, the front screen door swung open, and Leo—now nearly three years old—trotted out onto the porch wearing a tiny flannel shirt and cowboy boots, holding a wooden toy horse in one hand.
"Mama! Uncle Marcus! Saddle up! The stagecoach is leaving!" Leo announced with dramatic flair, galloping across the wooden floorboards.
Amanda burst out laughing, setting her tea down and sweeping her son up into her arms, peppering his cheeks with tickling kisses until he shrieked with helpless laughter.
"Well, Sheriff, I suppose we better get moving before the bandits catch us," Amanda smiled, setting him down on his feet and taking his small, warm hand in hers.

They walked down the wooden steps together—Amanda, Leo, and Marcus—stepping out onto the golden autumn path that led toward the orchard.
Amanda looked up at the bright blue Vermont sky, feeling a profound, absolute sense of peace settle over her soul. She had been pushed to the edge of a precipice, forced to watch her world shatter into a million jagged pieces. But she hadn't fallen. She had built wings from the ruins, proving once and for all that a mother’s love is the most unshakeable foundation in the universe.
