Chapter 6 - The Interrogator’s Mirror-6

Six months later.
The air inside the interrogation room at the Federal Building in downtown Miami was crisp, smelling faintly of institutional floor wax, cold coffee, and the quiet, crushing weight of absolute justice. The room was a stark, sterile cube of white concrete and brushed steel, dominated by a massive, one-way mirror that took up an entire wall.
Derek Vance—now legally processed and stripped of every fake corporate asset line he had stolen over four years—sat on the opposite side of the steel table.
He wore a bright orange inmate jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles secured to the floor anchors by heavy steel chains that clinked dismally against the concrete floor boards with every minor movement. His hair was uncombed, his face gaunt, his eyes bloodshot and rimmed with a deep, dark exhaustion. The arrogant, confident insurance salesman who had dominated the high societies of Edgewater had completely vanished, replaced by a jagged, bitter sneer of pure, desperate defeat.
I—sorry, Skylar stood behind the one-way mirror in the observation room, my arms crossed over my tailored gray civilian wool suit jacket, my gray eyes fixed on the monitor displaying his vitals. Beside me stood Special Agent Harris, a sharp woman whose face carried the quiet satisfaction of a long investigation finally finalized.
"He hasn't spoken a single word to his defense team since the grand jury signed the indictments last week," Agent Harris said, turning a page on her digital tablet. "He refused medical treatment beyond the basic clinic dressings. He just sits there, staring at the concrete door like he’s waiting for a message from Cyprus."
"The Cyprus pipeline is completely dead, Harris," Skylar said, her voice completely calm, devoid of any anger or hatred. She looked at him through the glass with a cold, clinical detachment that she knew would infuriate him more than any scream or tear. "The federal receivership completed the asset liquidation process on his personal real estate portfolio yesterday afternoon. Every dollar of the frozen eighty-five million dollars has been officially channeled into a non-revocable charitable endowment—The Skylar Cross Foundation for Pediatric Security and Whistleblower Advocacy."

"The foundation is opening its first tracking hubs inside the family court system next month, Skylar," Agent Harris smiled, a deep sense of pride softening her voice. "We’re going to ensure that no corporate developer can ever use a forged digital signature token to systematically isolate a vulnerable woman from her family trust assets. You gave this state its dignity back, Skylar."
Skylar let out a long, slow breath, a deep, profound sense of relief softening the hard lines around her eyes. The invisible cage of marital deceit, corporate extortion, and physical terror that Derek Vance and his sister Suzanne had built around her life had finally, permanently shattered, leaving nothing but the open sky ahead.
