Chapter 5 - The Short-Circuit Matrix-5

"The local warrants don't mean a damn thing to an international national security directive, Derek!" Special Agent Harris’s voice suddenly bellowed through the server vault like a clap of thunder, her gold badge glinting beneath the high-intensity searchlights of twenty FBI tactical operators who flooded the concrete room from the side utility access tunnels.
"Drop the weapon! Hands on your head!" the lead tactical operator roared, his laser sight painting a bright neon red dot directly on the center of Derek’s chest.
Derek didn't drop the iron fire poker. A wild, demonic roar of pure desperation tore from his throat as his body weight lunged forward toward the central master storage unit pylon, his hand snapping down toward the primary three-phase high-voltage transformer box mounted on the concrete column directly adjacent to the server racks.
CRASH-BOOM.
He slammed the heavy steel poker straight through the protective fiberglass shielding of the box, short-circuiting the main industrial power line running into the warehouse grid. A blinding, blue-white explosion of electrical arc fire erupted from the column, hissing violently as the pouring rain leaking through the corrugated roof vents flooded the exposed circuits, showering the concrete floorboards in a rain of white plaster dust and sparks.
The entire warehouse was plunged into a sudden, pitch-black twilight, the high-density server mainframes grinding to a dead halt as the main circuit breakers tripped, leaving nothing but the vibrant neon-green countdown timer on Skylar’s personal mobile device flashing down toward zero in the dark.
But the short-circuit didn't delete the evidence.

Before the smoke could even clear from the doorway frame, the lead cyber specialist had plugged his portable, non-networked diagnostic terminal straight into the console’s primary diagnostic port, his fingers flying across the keys as the system's backup lithium battery banks kicked in flawlessly. "The cascade partition format was permanently interrupted before it could touch the primary recovery files, Agent Harris! The original digital signature tokens linking Derek and Suzanne to the Nicosia shell accounts are completely intact!"
The operators stepped forward through the darkness, their high-intensity searchlights cutting through the smoky gloom as they secured the perimeter. They grabbed Derek by his wet linen shirt collar, hauling his shivering frame up from the concrete floorboards and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, mechanical click that finalized the total destruction of his corporate life.
