Chapter 3 - The Industrial Canal Vault-3

The high-performance luxury sedan Derek had leased under his company’s infrastructure account tore through the dark, storm-swept corridors of the Port of Miami, its tires screaming against the wet asphalt as he pushed the vehicle through the flooded potholes and broken gravel tracks of the riverfront district. A blinding sheet of freezing autumn rain battered the windshield, smearing the skeletal silhouettes of the massive cargo cranes and rusted iron containers into a shifting, featureless wasteland of gray water.

The time was 11:24 p.m. They had precisely thirty-six minutes before the financial clearing sessions closed their nightly processing loops in New York, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently transfer the remaining voting shares of his development group to Skylar's public advocacy foundation.

"The master database backup node is housed inside Storage Unit 108 at the Ironwood Maritime Annex," Derek yelled over the roar of the vehicle's engine and the thunder shaking the coastal sky, his hands white against the steering wheel as Suzanne whimpered in the passenger seat beside him. "It’s a legacy concrete bunker built during the shipping boom of the 1990s, reinforced with heavy steel blast doors and protected by an independent power grid. Skylar’s father hidden the original administrative ledger disks inside that vault before his passing. If we can destroy the physical hardware tokens before her lawyers mirror the drive cores... the federal grand jury won't have the baseline documentation to finalize the indictments tomorrow morning!"

"We have an anomaly at the perimeter gate, Derek!" Suzanne screamed, her fingers shaking as she pointed toward the digital navigation screen on the dashboard frame, where a massive flashing red pylon indicator was tracking an active network bypass command: WARNING. STRUCTURAL HYDROSTATIC FAULT DETECTED. PRESSURE VALVES OVERRIDE: ACTIVE.

"She’s already down there," Derek growled, his face twisting into a demonic mask of pure, unadulterated avarice as he drifted the sedan into the shadow of an overgrown loading dock near the canal locks. He cut the lights, plunging the cab into a pitch-black, wind-howling twilight illuminated only by the frantic crimson emergency indicators flashing across his phone screen.

He reached beneath his seat, his fingers wrapping firmly around the rubber grips of a heavy steel demolition fire poker he had extracted from his office hearth downtown. He didn't wait for a legal advisor or a private security detail; he launched his broad frame out into the freezing storm, sprinting toward the narrow utility access ladder of Sector 4 with a raw, desperate fury that stripped away the remaining armor of his polished salesman persona.
