Chapter 8 - The Interrogation Room

-8-

While the global corporate restructuring was being hammered out in Manhattan, the legal dragnet tightening around Julian Vance had reached its inevitable next phase.

Late that evening, Julian found himself sitting in a stark, windowless holding room at the lower Manhattan precinct of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White-Collar Crime Division. The room smelled of stale coffee, industrial floor wax, and decades of lingering desperation.

The metal table in front of him was scratched and worn. There was no comfortable leather chair here, no designer bottled water, and no obsequious assistant to fetch his espresso.

The heavy steel door swung open, and two federal investigators walked in. Leading the pair was Special Agent Sarah Jenkins, a sharp-eyed woman with a no-nonsense demeanor and a thick file folder clutched under her arm. She dropped the folder onto the metal table with a heavy thud that made Julian flinch.

Agent Jenkins pulled out the chair opposite him, sitting down and lacing her fingers together as she stared across the table at Julian.

Julian tried to straighten his damp, wrinkled Brioni suit, attempting to summon a shred of his former executive bravado.

"Look, I demand to make a phone call," Julian said, his voice carrying a nervous, defensive edge. "This is a gross miscarriage of justice! I am the CEO of Azure Crown Global! You can't just detain me without—"

"Former CEO, Mr. Vance," Agent Jenkins corrected him smoothly, cutting him off mid-sentence. She opened the folder and slid a printed document across the table. "And as of three hours ago, you aren't just facing civil asset forfeiture anymore. The U.S. Attorney’s office has formally accepted the federal criminal indictment package filed by Sterling Holdings."

Julian’s eyes darted down to the paper. Bold headings stared back at him: Wire Fraud, Grand Larceny, Falsification of Corporate Filings, and Embezzlement of Minor Trust Assets.

"This is absurd!" Julian protested, slamming his palm against the metal table. "I signed those contracts! I managed the expansion loans! How can managing a company be considered embezzlement?!"

"Because," Agent Jenkins replied, her voice remaining terrifyingly calm, "you knowingly signed financial disclosures pledging real estate assets as collateral for personal lines of credit—real estate assets that you never legally owned, and which were explicitly protected under irrevocable family trusts controlled by Victoria Sterling-Vance and Arthur Sterling."

She flipped open another page, pointing a manicured finger at a highlighted signature block.

"Furthermore, forensic audits of the resort's operational accounts over the past three years have revealed multiple unauthorized wire transfers totaling over four million dollars—transfers routed directly to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under shell companies registered in your personal name, as well as high-end luxury expenditures for unauthorized third parties."

Julian’s breath hitched. He swallowed hard, his mind racing wildly as he tried to calculate a way out. He thought of Chloe, currently locked out of the penthouse with no money, no credit cards, and no way to contact him. He thought of the media outlets currently devouring his reputation piece by piece.

"I was authorized..." Julian whispered, his voice finally cracking, the facade completely dissolving. "I was the public face... I built the brand recognition..."

"Brand recognition doesn't pay back embezzled millions, Mr. Vance," Agent Jenkins said quietly, closing the file folder with a crisp snap. "Your wife—excuse me, your estranged wife—had the forensic paper trail documented down to the exact second for over two years. She didn't trap you yesterday, Mr. Vance. She trapped you the moment you started believing your own press releases."

Julian stared blankly at the metal table, the cold, crushing weight of reality finally settling into his bones.

He hadn't been an executive betrayed by a sudden corporate coup. He had been a mouse playing in a cage, entirely unaware that the walls were made of glass, and that the person holding the key had been watching him run in circles the entire time.

"Can I... can I speak to her?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling pathetically. "Can I speak to Victoria?"

May you like

Agent Jenkins stood up, pushing her chair back with a scraping screech against the linoleum floor. She looked down at him with a mixture of professional indifference and quiet disdain.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Sterling-Vance is currently chairing a global executive board meeting from her Manhattan penthouse," Agent Jenkins said, turning toward the door. "I seriously doubt she has time on her calendar for an employee whose contract has been terminated."
