Chapter 4 - The Sunrise Disconnect

-4-

At 7:15 AM, Julian stepped out of the private elevator onto the penthouse landing, looking every bit the ruthless, untouchable corporate titan. He was dressed in a fresh, handmade Brioni suit, a gold Rolex gleaming on his wrist, his silver-rimmed designer sunglasses tucked neatly into his breast pocket.

He strolled briskly toward the executive dining room on the fifteenth floor, anticipating the warm, obsequious greetings of the staff and the quiet luxury of his morning routine.

As he pushed open the heavy oak doors of the dining room, however, something felt immediately off.

The room was usually bustling at this hour with general managers, high-rolling VIP guests, and senior operations directors eager to catch a moment of Julian’s time. Today, the room was dead silent. The panoramic windows looked out over the sparkling ocean, but the tables were completely empty, save for one person.

Sitting at the center table was David Vance—no relation to Julian, despite the shared surname, but rather the long-time senior vice president of regional operations whom I had personally recruited out of Wharton ten years ago. David looked pale, staring blankly down at an unopened leather folder resting on the white tablecloth.

Julian strode forward, flashing his trademark charming, authoritative grin.

"David! Early bird catches the worm, eh?" Julian said loudly, pulling out the chair opposite him and sitting down without waiting for an invitation. "Tell me the Q3 financial reports look as good on paper as they do in my head. We're announcing the Asian expansion today, and I want the numbers airtight before the press conference at ten."

David didn't smile. In fact, he didn't even look up. He slowly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and hollow, staring at Julian with a mixture of profound shock and thinly veiled pity.

Julian’s smile faltered slightly, his brow furrowing. "David? What’s wrong with you? Did the catering shipment from Paris get delayed again?"

"Julian," David finally spoke, his voice dry and strained. He pushed the heavy leather folder across the table. "You need to look at this."

"What is that?" Julian scoffed, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms. "If it's another routine compliance audit, have my secretary file it. I don't have time to read bureaucratic paperwork before the morning briefing."

"It’s not an audit, Julian," David said quietly, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "It’s a complete, unmitigated asset freeze executed directly by Sterling Holdings."

The silence in the room suddenly felt heavy, dropping like an anvil. Julian’s arrogant expression froze, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing his features.

"Sterling Holdings?" Julian laughed nervously, shaking his head. "What are you talking about? Sterling Holdings is our primary institutional investment partner. They hold minority passive shares in our holding company. They don't run this resort—I do."

David slowly slid the top document out of the folder and turned it around so Julian could read the bold, stark lettering at the top.

Julian’s eyes scanned the first paragraph. Then the second.

The color drained from his face so fast it looked as though someone had physically struck him across the cheek. The confident, glowing flush of a self-made tycoon vanished entirely, replaced by a sick, pasty gray.

"This... this is a mistake," Julian stammered, his voice cracking slightly on the vowels. He grabbed the paper with trembling fingers, bringing it closer to his face. "This is a forged document. The master lease... the underlying real estate deeds... they’re assigned to Azure Crown PLC! My name is on the incorporation filings!"

"Your name is on the operating subsidiary, Julian," David corrected him, his voice remarkably flat as he looked across the table at the man he had once been forced to call boss. "Not the master trust. According to these filings executed at 3:00 AM by Arthur Sterling and his legal team, the entire physical property, every trademark, every patent, and every square inch of land has always been held under an irrevocable family trust."

"That's... that's impossible," Julian whispered, staring blankly at the signature line. The signature at the bottom of the master revocation order wasn't Arthur’s.

It was mine.

Victoria Sterling-Vance.

Julian stared at my name, his breath catching in his throat as the horrific, staggering reality of what he had done last night began to crash down upon him like a tidal wave.

"Where is she?" Julian choked out, grabbing the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white. "Where is Victoria?"

Before David could answer, the wall-mounted television screen in the corner of the dining room—usually tuned to a rolling loop of financial news and resort promotional reels—suddenly flickered. The screen went black for a split second, replaced by the breaking news banner of a major national network.
