Chapter 3 - The Mistress in the Penthouse

-3-

While the corporate world was quietly being unspooled from beneath his feet, Julian Vance was sleeping soundly in the master penthouse suite of the Azure Crown Resort.

The penthouse was the crown jewel of the property—a sprawling, three-thousand-square-foot sanctuary of imported Italian marble, custom silk wall coverings, and floor-to-ceiling glass panels offering an unobstructed, panoramic view of the ocean. Every single detail of this room, from the minimalist floating fireplace to the bespoke velvet upholstery, had been hand-selected and designed by me during the grueling renovation three years ago.

Now, Chloe was lounging lazily across the king-sized bed, scrolling through her phone while draped in my cashmere coat, my grandmother’s emerald pendant catching the soft, ambient glow of the bedside lamps.

Julian stirred beside her, rolling over and burying his face in the expensive goose-down pillows. He stretched luxuriously, a smug, self-satisfied smile plastered across his face. He felt like a god.

"Morning already?" Julian mumbled, his voice thick with sleep as he reached out and lazily stroked Chloe’s bare shoulder.

"Barely," Chloe purred, tossing her phone onto the nightstand and leaning down to press a kiss against his cheek. "Though I have to admit, babe... throwing your wife out in the middle of a rainstorm last night? That was ice-cold. Even for you."

Julian chuckled, a deep, chest-rumbling sound of pure arrogance. He sat up, leaning back against the headboard and running a hand through his perfectly styled dark hair.

"She had it coming, Chloe," Julian said smoothly, dismissing me as if I were nothing more than an inconvenient piece of trash he had finally swept off his porch. "She was holding me back. She always acted like she was the brains of this operation, whispering in my ear about caution, risk management, and tradition. Look around us! Did caution build this empire? No. Ambition did. My ambition."

Chloe giggled, playing with the edge of my cashmere coat where it draped over her collarbone. "Well, your ambition certainly paid off. I mean, look at this place. Look at me! I’m finally living the life I deserve. Are you sure she won't cause problems? Legally, I mean?"

Julian snorted, reaching over to pick up a crystal glass of water from the nightstand. "Legal problems? With what money? With what lawyers? My name is on every single major contract associated with this resort group. I control the board, I control the media narrative, and I control the cash flow. She’s a nobody without me. By noon today, she’ll probably be calling my assistant begging for grocery money."

He took a long sip of water, feeling invincible. He truly believed his own myth. For nine years, I had meticulously shielded him from the harsh realities of how our family’s holding structures actually operated, deliberately letting him take the public credit for every business win so he would remain comfortable, complacent, and entirely dependent on the safety net we provided. I wanted him to feel powerful. I wanted him to shine.

I had thought it was love. I had thought it was partnership.

Instead, it had fed a monster of staggering proportions.

"Well," Chloe smiled, sliding closer to him and pressing her body against his chest, tracing the lapels of his silk pajamas. "Just make sure you change the security codes on the private elevator today. I don't want any dramatic, pathetic scenes while I'm lounging by the infinity pool."

"Done," Julian promised, leaning down to kiss her lips. "Today is a new era, Chloe. Today, we announce the multi-million-dollar expansion into the Asian market, and I’m going to take full credit for every single square inch of it. No more whispers about my wife's family backing. From today on, the legend of Julian Vance stands entirely on its own."

He glanced at the bedside clock. It was 6:00 AM.

"Come on," Julian said, throwing off the covers and swinging his legs over the edge of the bed. "Let'p get dressed and head down to the executive dining room. I want to sip my morning espresso while watching the news report on our latest quarterly earnings growth. God, I love being a winner."

He had no idea that the clock was already ticking down to zero.
