Chapter 7 - The Mistress’s Awakening

7

While Grant was sweating under the harsh fluorescent lights of the federal interrogation room, Vanessa Cole was experiencing her own terrifying reality check back in Highland Park.

She had managed to pack two designer suitcases before the moving crew arrived, dragging them down the front steps just as the Vance Global Security guards chained and locked the wrought-iron security gates. Standing on the sidewalk in the scorching Texas heat, surrounded by her Louis Vuitton luggage and holding her shivering Chihuahua, Vanessa pulled out her phone and dialed Grant’s number.

It went straight to voicemail.

Panic rising in her throat, she dialed Marcus Vance, the CFO.

"Hello?" Marcus answered on the first ring, sounding breathless and frantic.

"Marcus! Thank God!" Vanessa cried out. "Where is Grant? The police—well, federal agents—just locked us out of the house! They took everything! Where are you? Come pick me up!"

"Vanessa, listen to me very carefully," Marcus said, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "Do not call this number again. Do not come to the office. The FBI raided the executive suites thirty minutes ago, and they're arresting everyone who signed off on the Apex Holdings wire transfers."

"Arresting people? Marcus, I didn't sign anything! I was just an assistant! Grant was the CEO!"

"Your name is on the secondary disbursement account, Vanessa!" Marcus yelled back over the sound of shouting sirens in the background. "Grant used your name to siphon over a million dollars in untaxed bonuses over the last three years to avoid corporate disclosure limits! You're an co-conspirator on paper! The IRS special agents are probably looking for you right now!"

The line went dead.

Vanessa dropped her phone. It bounced against the pavement, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of cracks. She stood alone on the sidewalk in front of the mansion where she had lived like a queen for two years, realizing with stomach-churning horror that she had tied her entire future to a man whose empire was made of smoke and mirrors.

A sleek black sedan pulled up quietly to the curb. The tinted window rolled down smoothly, revealing a woman in a sharp grey business suit wearing dark sunglasses.

"Miss Vanessa Cole?" the woman asked, her voice calm and utterly emotionless.

Vanessa backed away instinctively, clutching her designer handbag. "Who are you? What do you want?"

"My name is Victoria Sterling, senior investigator for the Vance Family Foundation," the woman said, opening the car door and stepping out. She held out a thick manila envelope. "You are being served with a civil asset forfeiture notice and a federal subpoena regarding your involvement in Grant Corporation’s financial embezzlement."

"I didn't do anything!" Vanessa shrieked, tears of frustration and fear spilling down her cheeks, ruining her expensive makeup. "Grant gave me those things! He told me the company was his! He said we were going to be rich forever!"

Victoria looked at her with an expression of profound, chilling pity. "Mr. Whitmore was a small-time hustler playing in a league he didn't understand. And you were a willing participant in his downfall. You have two choices, Miss Cole. You can cooperate fully with the federal prosecutors, hand over every luxury item, piece of jewelry, and vehicle purchased with corporate funds, and testify against Grant in exchange for witness protection and reduced sentencing—or you can spend the next ten years sharing a federal penitentiary cell with common criminals."

Vanessa looked from the manila envelope in Victoria’s hand to the locked gates of the mansion, and finally down at her expensive, dirt-stained designer shoes. The glamour, the wealth, the stolen pearl earrings, the silk robes—it had all vanished into thin air in less than twelve hours.

She slowly reached out her shaking hand and took the envelope.
