Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Mistress

10

While Grant was signing away his corporate empire on the 40th floor, Vanessa Cole was experiencing the swift, merciless reality of justice on the ground floor of the federal building across the city.

She sat in a small, windowless conference room, clutching her designer handbag like a lifeline, while two IRS special agents and a Vance Family Foundation investigator reviewed her financial records page by page.

"Miss Cole," Special Agent Miller said, sliding a thick binder across the table. "According to our forensic audit, over the past three years, Grant Whitmore transferred a total of one million two hundred thousand dollars in embezzled corporate funds into three separate personal bank accounts registered under your name and social security number."

Vanessa shook her head frantically, tears streaming down her face, ruining her mascara. "I didn't know it was embezzled! Grant told me it was his personal investment income! He told me he was a multimillionaire developer! I was just his girlfriend!"

"Your signature is on the corporate authorization forms for the second and third accounts, Miss Cole," Victoria Sterling countered smoothly, opening a document to display her digital signature. "Furthermore, you knowingly utilized stolen corporate funds to purchase luxury vehicles, designer jewelry—including the pearl earrings belonging to Mrs. Claire Vance—and high-end real estate leases."

"The earrings!" Vanessa gasped defensively. "He gave them to me! He told me Claire didn't want them anymore!"

"Stealing property from the marital estate during the commission of a felony constitutes grand larceny," Victoria replied, her voice devoid of sympathy. "And wearing them at the dining table while mocking the homeowner adds aggravating circumstances to your indictment."

The door opened, and a federal marshal stepped in, holding a pair of steel handcuffs.

Vanessa’s heart skipped a beat. She stood up abruptly, backing away until her spine hit the cold concrete wall. "No! You can't arrest me! I'm a victim too! Grant manipulated me! He lied to me! You should be arresting him, not me!"

"You're both going to federal prison, Miss Cole," Agent Miller said calmly, gesturing to the marshal. "The only difference is whether you spend the next fifteen years there alone or cooperating with the prosecutor's office."

The marshal stepped forward, grabbed Vanessa’s arms, and pulled them behind her back. The cold, sharp click of the handcuffs echoed in the small room like a final sentence. As they dragged her toward the heavy metal door, Vanessa caught a glimpse of her reflection in the dark, polished glass of the conference table—a pathetic, tear-stained figure in designer clothes, paying the ultimate price for her arrogance and greed.

She had thought she won a prize when she stood in Claire’s silk robe watching her get thrown into the rain. Now, she realized she had merely purchased a front-row ticket to her own destruction.
