Chapter 3 - The Knock at the Door

3

The heavy brass knocker on the front door hammered three times, the sound reverberating through the Whitmore mansion like the strike of a judge’s gavel. Vanessa retreated backward toward the kitchen, her face drained of all color, clutching Claire’s silk robe tightly around her chest as if it could somehow shield her from the impending storm.

"Grant! Who is that? Are those cops?" she whispered, her voice trembling with rising hysteria. "Did Claire call the police? What did you do?"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Grant barked, wiping a thin layer of sweat from his forehead. He straightened his designer shirt, attempting to regain a shred of his customary corporate authority. He was Grant Whitmore; men like him didn't just crumble because of a frozen bank account and an angry board of directors. He walked toward the heavy oak door, unlatched the deadbolt, and pulled it open with a sharp jerk.

Standing on the porch was not a police officer, but a tall, immaculately dressed man in a bespoke navy suit, holding a leather portfolio embossed with the seal of the United States District Court. Behind him stood two armed federal marshals and a team of private security contractors wearing black tactical vests with the insignia of Vance Global Security.

"Grant Whitmore?" the man in the navy suit asked, his voice crisp and professional.

"Yes," Grant said defensively, planting his feet firmly in the doorway. "Who the hell are you? And what gives you the right to trespass on private property?"

"My name is Thomas Vance, senior legal counsel for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, acting on special assignment," the man replied smoothly, stepping past Grant without waiting for an invitation. He tossed a thick stack of legal documents onto the very marble console where Claire had been shoved less than twelve hours earlier.

"You are being served with a multi-count federal indictment," Thomas continued, opening his portfolio and pulling out document after document. "Charges include corporate wire fraud, money laundering through offshore shell entities in the Cayman Islands, intellectual property theft from Vance Logistics, and falsification of commercial credit disclosures."

Grant stared at the papers, his mind spinning wildly. "Vance Logistics? I have never stolen anything from Vance Logistics! We have a standard corporate partnership—"

"A partnership that was entirely built on fraudulent financial statements and forged signatures from Arthur Vance’s personal office," Thomas interrupted, looking up with eyes as cold and dead as winter stone. "Furthermore, pursuant to Section 4 of the Emergency Asset Forfeiture Act, this residence, all registered vehicles, your personal bank accounts, your investment portfolios, and all luxury assets purchased within the last seven years are hereby seized by the federal government under writ of attachment, pending full restitution to the aggrieved parties."

Vanessa screamed from the hallway, running forward. "Seized? You can't seize this house! I live here! My clothes, my jewelry, my car—they're all mine!"

Thomas turned his cold gaze toward her, taking in her appearance—the expensive silk robe, the heavy makeup, the look of desperate panic in her eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small photograph, holding it up.

"Miss Vanessa Cole, correct? Former executive assistant at Grant Corporation, currently listed as an unregistered beneficiary on multiple corporate shell accounts totaling over 1.2 million dollars in unearned compensation," Thomas recited effortlessly. "An additional federal subpoena has been issued for your immediate financial records. You have forty-eight hours to vacate this property, surrender all luxury items purchased with corporate funds, and present yourself for questioning at our downtown offices. Failure to comply will result in an immediate felony arrest warrant."

Grant lunged forward, his face turning a deep, furious shade of crimson. "This is a setup! This is absolute bullshit! I want to speak to a judge! I want to call my lawyers!"

"Your lawyers resigned thirty seconds ago, Mr. Whitmore," Thomas replied calmly, turning toward the door. "And as for a judge—you'll see plenty of them over the next thirty years. Pack your bags. You have two hours before the locks are changed."

With that, the legal counsel walked out, leaving Grant and Vanessa standing in the silent, echoing foyer of a house that no longer belonged to them.
