Chapter 4 - Blood in the Sub-Basement-4-

The municipal drainage culvert smelled of stagnant river water, rusted iron, and decades of urban decay. The water was ankle-deep, freezing, and swift, swirling around Luca’s tactical boots as he led Marco and a four-man elite assault team through the pitch-black concrete tube.

Every breath Luca took felt like inhaling broken glass. His shoulder throbbed with every step, and his chest felt tight, as if an iron band were slowly being cinched tighter around his ribs. He kept his eyes fixed on the back of the man in front of him, forcing his feet forward through sheer willpower.

One step.

Then another.

Emma.

They reached the rusted iron ladder bolted into the concrete wall beneath Pier 42. At the top of the ladder sat the heavy circular access hatch Luca had memorized from blueprints decades ago.

Luca motioned for Marco to take point. Marco silently climbed the rungs, pressed his ear against the cold metal of the hatch, and listened for thirty seconds before gently testing the locking mechanism.

It wasn't sealed from the inside.

Marco pushed upward with both hands. The heavy iron disc swung open with a muffled metallic scrape, admitting the hum of heavy industrial generators and the faint smell of ozone and cigarette smoke.

One by one, the strike team slipped out of the sewer and into the cavernous sub-station of Pier 42.

Rows of massive electrical transformers hummed with blue-white energy, casting long, jittery shadows across the concrete floor. Above them, through an open metal grating catwalk, muffled voices drifted down from the main warehouse level.

“...the Swiss boss wants confirmation by dawn,” a harsh, accented voice muttered. “If Bellini doesn’t sign over the Red Hook deeds, the girl goes on the morning container ship to Antwerp. No exceptions.”

Another voice laughed—a dry, cruel sound. “And the mother?”

“Keep her quiet until the transfer is complete. After that, she’s dead weight.”

Luca’s vision swam for a fraction of a second. A sharp, searing pain stabbed directly into the center of his chest, forcing him to clutch his left arm against his tactical vest. His knees buckled slightly, but Marco caught him by the elbow, steadying him with a fierce grip.

“Breathe, Luca,” Marco whispered harshly in his ear. “Slow down. You need to be steady when we reach them.”

Luca took three deep, controlled breaths through his nose, forcing the rebellious rhythm of his heart back into a semblance of order. He drew his Sig Sauer, flicked off the safety, and pointed toward the steel staircase leading up to the main floor.

“Now,” Luca whispered.

They moved up the stairs with terrifying speed and precision.

The main warehouse floor was a vast expanse of stacked shipping crates, rusted overhead cranes, and hanging halogen work lights. In the center of the room, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries, sat Rachel and Emma.

Rachel was bound tightly to a wooden chair, her face pale, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, but her body positioned defensively in front of a small, trembling bundle of pink fabric.

Emma.

Her dark curls were messy, her face streaked with tears, clutching her stuffed bear—Mr. Buttons—against her chest so hard her small knuckles were white.

“Don’t touch her!” Rachel screamed as one of the guards stepped closer with a menacing grin. “Leave her alone!”

“Shut up, bitch,” the guard snarled, raising the butt of his assault rifle. “Your boyfriend has thirty minutes to reply to the broker's terminal or—"

Bang.

The sound of silenced gunfire cracked through the cavernous warehouse like thunder.

The guard’s head snapped back in a mist of crimson, and he collapsed instantly onto the concrete floor, lifeless before he hit the ground.

Chaos erupted in an instant.
