Chapter 13 - A Promise Kept-13-

Summer deepened into July, bringing long, lazy afternoons of cicada hums, warm breeze through the pine trees, and the simple, ordinary rhythms of a family living without fear.

For Luca Bellini, the transition from shadow-broker to ordinary civilian father was both humbling and surreal.

On a sunny Saturday morning, Luca found himself sitting on a small plastic stool in the middle of the estate’s sprawling lawn, holding a pink plastic teacup that contained absolutely nothing while Emma solemnly poured imaginary chamomile tea from an empty porcelain pot.

“Careful, Daddy, it’s very hot,” Emma instructed with an air of profound authority, her little eyebrows furrowed in intense concentration.

“I’ll be extremely careful,” Luca replied gravely, taking a serious sip from the empty cup while Rachel watched from a lounge chair nearby, laughing softly behind her book.

Marco walked across the lawn carrying a thick stack of mail and a secure satellite tablet. He stopped a few feet away, eyeing Luca sitting on a child-sized stool with a pink teacup with an expression of profound amusement.

“Interruption in paradise, boss,” Marco said, holding up the tablet.

Luca set the teacup down gently. “Give Emma two minutes to finish her tea party, then I’ll be over.”

Emma looked up, her green eyes wide. “Are the bad guys back, Daddy?”

“No, sweetheart,” Luca smiled, reaching out to gently pinch her nose. “Just boring grown-up paperwork. Go show Mommy your tea party while I talk to Marco.”

Emma nodded happily, scrambling over to Rachel’s lounge chair with her teapot.

Luca stood up, stretching his legs, and walked over to where Marco stood beneath the shade of a massive oak tree.

“What is it?” Luca asked, dropping his casual demeanor as his eyes hardened slightly.

“Nothing tactical,” Marco assured him, handing over the tablet. “The federal receivership court in Washington just finalized the liquidation of Volkov’s remaining domestic assets. Every dollar has been permanently frozen and redirected into a blind, non-traceable charitable trust managed by the state.”

Luca glanced at the digital summary on the screen. “And Volkov?”

“Fled to a private estate in South America where extradition treaties don’t apply. But our intelligence feeds confirm he suffered a severe stroke two weeks ago. He’s bedridden, half-paralyzed, and completely irrelevant.” Marco paused, looking out toward Emma and Rachel on the lawn. “In short, Luca... you’re officially a ghost to the underworld. Nobody’s looking for you anymore.”

Luca handed the tablet back. A profound weight he hadn’t fully realized he was still carrying finally lifted from his shoulders.

“Good,” Luca said quietly. “Let’s keep it that way.”

“Always,” Marco smiled, tipping an imaginary hat before turning and walking back toward the main house.

Luca stood beneath the oak tree for a long moment, listening to the sound of his daughter’s laughter echoing across the grass.

His heart beat steadily against his ribs—strong, rhythmic, and free.
