Chapter 12 - The Open Road-12-

The flight back to New York was silent, swift, and uninterrupted.
By 6:00 a.m., the Bombardier Global touched down on the private runway in Westchester, the morning sun painting the eastern horizon in brilliant shades of gold and amber.
Luca walked up the stone pathway of the estate, his boots crunching softly on the gravel driveway. The heavy oak front door was unlocked—Rachel had left it that way, waiting.
He stepped inside the foyer.
The house was quiet, filled with the familiar, comforting scent of brewing coffee and fresh pancakes.
From the living room came the soft, rhythmic murmur of a cartoon playing on the television, followed by the sound of pattering footsteps running across the hardwood floor.
“Daddy!”
Emma came flying around the corner, her green sweater bright against the morning light, her dark curls bouncing as she ran straight toward him with her arms wide open.
Luca didn’t hesitate. He dropped to his knees, dropping his travel bag to the floor, and opened his arms just in time.
Emma slammed into his chest with a joyful laugh, throwing her arms around his neck and burying her face into his shoulder.
“You’re back!” she squealed happily, squeezing him tight. “Mommy said you went on a big trip!”
Luca wrapped both arms around her small, warm body, burying his face in her hair as a wave of profound, overwhelming peace washed over him. His heart monitor hummed silently beneath his chest—steady, rhythmic, and alive.
“I’m back, sweetheart,” Luca whispered, kissing the top of her head. “And I’m never going away again.”
Rachel walked into the foyer from the kitchen, holding two mugs of coffee. She leaned against the wooden doorframe, watching them with a soft, knowing smile on her face. There were no bags under her eyes anymore. The tension that had defined her life for three long years was finally gone.
She walked over, setting the coffee mugs on the entry table, and knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around both Luca and Emma in one tight, unbreakable embrace.
Luca looked from Rachel to his daughter, then out the open window toward the quiet, sunlit forest beyond the estate.
The shadows of his past were finally behind him.
