Chapter 9 - The Biological Truth

Grant’s knees buckled slightly as the clinical words hung in the resonant air of the cathedral. The memory of that sterile hospital room, the surgical consultation, and the quiet medical bills he had attempted to hide behind a secondary corporate credit card suddenly crashed back into his consciousness with devastating clarity. He looked from Daniel’s cold, analytical stare to my unwavering gaze, and finally to Celeste, whose radiant, expectant expression had completely dissolved into a mask of frantic, cornered panic.
“That’s... that’s not true,” Grant stammered, his voice losing all its prior authority, reducing him to a stuttering wreck before the hundred most powerful and influential people in the city. He turned desperately toward Celeste, his hands reaching out in a pleading gesture. “Celeste, tell them. Tell them it’s a lie. You said—you told me it was a boy, that it was mine...”
Celeste shrank back from him, her hands dropping away from her stomach as the color drained completely from her face. The defensive arrogance that had defined her entrance vanished into thin air, replaced by the unmistakable look of a scam artist whose elaborate grift had just been publicly dismantled down to the studs. She didn’t deny the accusation; instead, her eyes darted frantically toward the side exit doors of the vestry, measuring the distance to freedom.
“You lying, manipulative bitch!” Vivian shrieked from the front pew, lunging forward with unexpected fury as she grabbed the back of the wooden pew for balance. She pointed a shaking finger directly at Celeste’s chest. “You swore to me! You swore on your mother’s grave that the child belonged to this family! You said we were securing the Grant dynasty!”
“I—I didn't mean...” Celeste stammered, backing away toward the altar as the assembled guests erupted into a deafening roar of outrage, whispers, and outright laughter. Flashbulbs began to pop blindly from the rear balcony as society columnists and hidden tabloid reporters captured every single agonizing second of the total collapse.
Daniel stepped forward, pulling a secondary document from his briefcase—a signed financial transfer ledger accompanied by a certified bank routing statement. He held it up for the room to see. “Not only is Mr. Grant biologically incapable of siring a child, but forensic accounting audits conducted over the last seventy-two hours confirm that Miss Celeste received a cumulative total of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in direct wire transfers from Grant’s corporate discretionary accounts over the past three months—funds explicitly designated for company payroll and R&D development, diverted directly to fund her personal luxury expenses and hush agreements with third parties.”

The betrayal was total, absolute, and multidimensional. Grant stared at Celeste, the man who had believed he was a master manipulator suddenly realizing he had been played as a secondary mark in an even larger, more desperate con. Celeste, realizing the game was entirely up, spun around and bolted blindly through the vestry doors, abandoning her bridal bouquet on the marble steps as the cathedral doors swung shut behind her fleeing figure.
I stood holding Lily, watching the wreckage of Grant’s meticulously engineered life burn to the ground with quiet, undisturbed grace. The man who had tossed divorce papers at my hospital bed while dismissing our newborn daughter as a "useless little girl" now stood completely alone on the chancel steps, stripped of his wealth, his company, his bride, and his fraudulent legacy.
