Chapter 7 - The Subpoenas

Daniel’s footsteps echoed sharply against the marble floor of the central aisle as he marched purposefully toward the front of the cathedral, completely ignoring the nervous gasps and rising panic of the surrounding guests. Grant froze midway down the chancel steps, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated horror as he recognized my brother. The color drained entirely from Grant’s face, leaving him looking chalky and hollow beneath the warm amber glow of the altar candles.
“Daniel,” Grant choked out, his voice cracking slightly on the syllable as he took an instinctive step backward toward the safety of the altar rail. “What is the meaning of this? This is a private, family-only religious ceremony. You have no jurisdiction here.”
Daniel did not even break stride or spare Grant a glance until he stopped directly beside me, casting a brief, affectionate look down at Lily before turning his steady, unflinching gaze onto my former husband.
“Jurisdiction, Grant?” Daniel’s voice rang clear and resonant across the cathedral acoustics, carrying the weight of a courtroom judge delivering a binding verdict. “You utilized Mercer Hale’s corporate resources to execute a fraudulent, unilateral divorce filing while actively concealing material marital assets. You transferred commercial real estate owned jointly by your primary holding company into the personal possession of an unregistered third party just forty-eight hours ago—a direct violation of federal securities compliance and fiduciary trust charters.”
Daniel snapped open the leather briefcase, pulling out a thick sheaf of legal documents stamped with official county and federal seals. He held them up so the entire front rows of the congregation—consisting of major investors, board members, and prominent civic leaders—could clearly see the bold headings printed across the top.
“By order of the superior court and the primary trustees of the Grant-Hale Family Trust,” Daniel continued, his tone clinical and unyielding, “all corporate voting shares, executive privileges, personal bank accounts, and real estate holdings currently under your control are hereby frozen, rescinded, and reverted to the primary trust beneficiary effective immediately.”
A chaotic wave of frantic whispering erupted through the pews. Several prominent board members seated in the third row instantly stood up, frantically pulling out their smartphones to check their corporate stock portfolios and emergency financial feeds. Across the chancel, Vivian let out a sharp, breathless gasp and stumbled backward, collapsing heavily back into the wooden pew as the terrifying scale of the financial annihilation began to dawn upon her.

Grant lunged forward, his face contorted in blind rage as he reached out to grab the papers from Daniel’s hands. “This is a lie! It’s an illegal ambush! You don’t have the authority—I built this company from the ground up! I am the majority shareholder!”
“You were a capitalized employee, Grant,” Daniel replied coldly, stepping smoothly out of reach while the two federal marshals stepped forward to block Grant’s path with quiet, immovable precision. “And as of twelve minutes ago, you are an unemployed individual facing multiple federal indictments for corporate fraud, perjury, and asset misappropriation.”
