Chapter 11 - The Audit

-11-

Within forty-eight hours of the cathedral incident, the federal indictment and corporate asset freeze went into full effect across every major financial institution in the state. The fallout was swift, catastrophic, and total. Mercer Hale’s elite litigation division, acting under the direct authorization of the primary family trust, seized control of Grant’s downtown corporate tower, his luxury vehicles, his offshore accounts, and the newly purchased lake property that he had illegally transferred to Celeste.

I sat in the sunlit study of my mother’s estate, watching through the floor-to-ceiling windows as the morning sun illuminated the manicured gardens outside. Lily was sleeping soundly in her bassinet beside my desk, her tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm. The turbulence of the past week felt like a distant storm that had cleared the air, leaving behind a pristine, unclouded sky.

The heavy oak door of the study swung open, and Daniel walked in carrying a thick stack of finalized financial audit summaries and corporate restructuring documents. He looked tired but deeply satisfied, dropping the heavy folder onto the mahogany surface with a dull, heavy thud.

“It’s done,” Daniel announced, sinking into the leather armchair opposite my desk and loosening his tie. “The board of directors held an emergency virtual meeting at midnight. They unanimously voted to strip Grant of all executive voting rights, remove his name from the corporate charter, and restructure the entire holding entity under our family trust’s direct administration. He won’t even control the trademark rights to his own startup name by Monday morning.”

I opened the folder, scanning the crisp, black-and-white financial statements with a critical eye. Every penny of misappropriated funds had been successfully clawed back. The lake property was back under trust management, and Celeste’s fraudulent claims had been formally dismissed by the family court following her sudden, unexplained disappearance from the city limits just hours after the wedding debacle.

“And Grant?” I asked quietly, looking up from the documents.

“He’s currently being held at the federal detention facility downtown awaiting arraignment,” Daniel replied, leaning back in his chair with a faint, cynical smirk. “His defense attorneys have already tried to file three separate motions for bail reduction, but every single one of them was denied due to flight risk and the sheer volume of unrecovered assets. The federal prosecutor is pushing for a maximum sentence given the scale of the corporate fraud and the misuse of regulated trust capital.”

I closed the folder, resting my hand gently on the smooth leather cover. I felt no pity for him—only a profound sense of closure. Grant had chosen his path, driven by an insatiable hunger for status, a toxic obsession with patriarchal legacy, and a complete willingness to discard anyone who didn't fit his narrow, selfish definition of value. He had built his entire identity on the belief that he was inherently superior, forgetting that true power requires integrity, loyalty, and an understanding of one's foundations.

“Let him sit with it,” I said calmly. “He wanted a legacy built on lies and arrogance. Now he has all the time in the world to contemplate the architecture of his own destruction.”
