Chapter 5 - The Doctor’s Dark Prescription-5

Leah’s heart slammed against her ribs with the force of a battering ram. She gripped the cold metal doorframe of the nursery entrance, her knuckles turning chalk-white. Inside the sterile, glass-walled room, Dr. Celia Rusk leaned over the bassinet with chilling professional detachment.

"Hush now, little one," Dr. Rusk murmured softly, her voice carrying faintly through the ventilation grate above Leah. "Your mother has chosen a very difficult path. By morning, you won't even remember her name."

The doctor uncapped the syringe, the fluorescent light glinting menacingly off the steel needle. She reached down toward the pale blue blanket where Leah’s newborn son slept peacefully, completely oblivious to the mortal danger hovering inches above him.

A primal, feral rage surged through Leah. All the fear, all the exhaustion, all the psychological torture she had endured over the past week evaporated into pure, unadulterated survival instinct.

She didn't wait for a plan. She threw herself against the glass door of the nursery, shoving it open with a loud, crashing slam that echoed down the quiet basement corridor.

"Get away from my son!" Leah screamed.

Dr. Rusk whipped around, her eyes widening in genuine shock as Leah charged across the room like a cornered tigress. Before the doctor could react, Leah slammed her shoulder directly into Rusk’s midsection, sending the older woman crashing hard against a metal supply cart.

The syringe flew from Rusk’s hand, shattering against the linoleum floor and sending a clear, viscous liquid splattering across the tiles.

Dr. Rusk groaned, clutching her ribs as she glared up at Leah with undisguised venom. "You foolish, hysterical girl. You have no idea what you've just destroyed. Doreen will tear you apart piece by piece."

"Doreen can rot in hell," Leah snarled. She didn't hesitate; she scooped her newborn son out of the bassinet, pressing his warm, fragile body frantically against her chest. He let out a soft, sleepy whimper before snuggling closer to her heartbeat, safe for the moment.

Rusk scrambled backward on the floor, reaching for a wall-mounted emergency alarm button.

Leah didn't give her the chance. She grabbed a heavy steel oxygen canister from the corner and jammed it squarely beneath the door handles of the nursery doors, locking them from the inside just as heavy footsteps and shouting voices echoed down the basement hallway outside.

"Inside! Check the records room!" a man’s voice roared—Nathan, sounding frantic and unhinged.

Leah held her breath, clutching her baby tightly as she backed away toward the emergency service exit at the rear of the neonatal ward. The exit sign glowed with a faint, green neon light, leading out into the cold, rainy alleyway behind the hospital.

She kicked the crash bar of the heavy metal exit door with her heel.

Clang!

The door flew open, letting in a rush of freezing autumn rain and wet wind. But as Leah stepped out into the night, a blinding pair of headlights swept across the alley, pinning her against the brick wall like a bug under a microscope.

A black luxury SUV idled at the mouth of the alley, its engine rumbling like a predatory beast. The passenger door swung open, and stepping out into the rain with an umbrella in hand was Doreen Carver herself, flanked by two burly private security guards.
