Chapter 3 - The Phantom Patient of Room 402-3

The needle never made contact with Leah’s skin.
Just as Nurse Halloway lunged forward with the sedative, the heavy fire alarm above the consultation room door shrieked to life, filling the corridor with a blinding strobe of red light and an ear-piercing klaxon.
Chaos erupted instantly. Dr. Vance dropped his clipboard, swearing as the sprinkler system overhead hissed menacingly. Taking advantage of the sudden pandemonium, Leah spun around, shoved Nurse Halloway hard against the metal doorframe, and bolted out into the chaotic hallway.
She didn't run toward the elevators; she sprinted back toward the maternity ward, her surgical stitches screaming in protest with every stride. Her only goal was Room 402—the silk suite where Simone was waiting.
When Leah burst through the door of the observation room, panting and bleeding slightly through her hospital gown, Simone was standing calmly by the window, adjusting her diamond earrings as if nothing were happening. The fire alarms blared outside, but inside the room, it was eerily quiet.
"I see you chose violence," Simone remarked smoothly, turning around with an amused smirk. "I admire a woman who doesn't go down quietly."
"They have the commitment papers," Leah gasped, clutching her abdomen as she leaned against the wall for support. "Nathan signed over everything to his mother. They're going to take my baby tonight."
Simone’s expression hardened, losing its mocking edge. She walked over to her designer handbag on the nightstand, unzipped a hidden compartment, and pulled out a heavy, professional-grade keycard and a sleek, unlisted burner phone.
"Nathan is a weak-willed coward dancing to the tune of a monster," Simone said coldly, tossing the keycard onto the bed. "Doreen Carver has been doing this for decades. Do you really think you're the first wife she’s driven 'mad' to secure an heir for the Carver family fortune?"
Leah stared at her, the blood draining from her face. "What do you mean? Who are you, Simone?"
"I’m someone who got careless and fell for a man who turned out to be one of Doreen’s loyal lapdogs," Simone replied bitterly, touching her own swollen stomach. "They tried to stage my disappearance six months ago. I played along, checked into their 'wellness retreat,' and spent every waking hour building a file on their entire operation. Briar Glen isn't a hospital, Leah. It’s a human trafficking ring wrapped in medical legitimacy for the ultra-wealthy."
The room seemed to spin around Leah. The betrayal by Nathan was devastating, but the realization that her child was trapped inside a systemic, generational nightmare made the air turn to ice in her lungs.
"My son," Leah choked out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Where are they keeping the newborns during the fire drill evacuation?"
"Basement Level B," Simone said, sliding the burner phone into Leah's trembling hands. "Secure archive and neonatal quarantine. But you can't walk down there through the halls. Every camera in this building is wired directly to Doreen’s private tablet."

Simone walked to the corner of the room, pressed her fingernail against an inconspicuous decorative molding panel, and popped it open to reveal a dark, narrow shaft descending into the concrete bowels of the hospital.
"The old maintenance dumbwaiter shaft," Simone whispered, her eyes burning with fierce determination. "It leads directly to the neonatal recovery nursery. Go get your son, Leah. Because if you don't reach him before dawn, you will never see his face again."
