Chapter 4 - Descent into the Neonatal Crypt-4

The metal walls of the maintenance shaft were cold, damp, and smelled heavily of industrial grease and old dust. Leah squeezed her slender frame into the cramped enclosure, ignoring the sharp twinge of pain in her abdomen. With the burner phone clutched tightly in one hand to use as a makeshift flashlight, she pulled the heavy access hatch closed above her, plunging herself into absolute darkness.
She began to shimmy downward along the rusted guide rails, her bare feet finding purchase on the narrow metal brackets. Every creak of the aging machinery sounded like a gunshot in the confined space, threatening to alert the security patrols roaming the upper floors.
Think of your son, she repeated like a mantra in her mind. Every inch down is an inch closer to him.
Above her, muffled through layers of concrete and steel, she heard the frantic voice of Nurse Halloway barking orders over a portable radio.
"Patient Carver has escaped the consultation room! Sweep the south wing! Check the stairwells!"
Leah froze, pressing her back flat against the cold metal wall as a pair of heavy boots thudded across the ceiling grate just feet above her head.
"She couldn't have gone far," a man’s voice echoed down the shaft—Nathan’s voice.
Hearing her husband’s voice didn't bring grief anymore; it brought a searing, radioactive fury. The man who had whispered sweet nothingness into her hair while she carried his child was now hunting her like an animal to appease his mother's tyrannical delusions.
When the footsteps faded down the corridor, Leah resumed her descent.
After what felt like hours, the shaft opened up into a dimly lit concrete alcove behind the basement Level B neonatal unit. A heavy wire-mesh door blocked her path, but Simone’s keycard slipped effortlessly into the magnetic bypass lock attached to the frame.
Click.
The door swung open with a soft hiss, releasing a wave of chilled, antiseptic-laden air.
Leah stepped out into the basement archives. Rows of towering metal filing cabinets stretched out into the gloom, bearing labels from decades past. But as she crept past the rows toward the glass-enclosed neonatal nursery at the far end of the hall, she noticed something that made her blood run cold.
Every single file in these cabinets didn't contain medical records. They contained adoption surrenders, forged birth certificates, and psychiatric commitment orders bearing Doreen Carver’s signature stretching back thirty years.
Staring at the rows of stolen identities, Leah realized the horrifying scale of the conspiracy. Doreen hadn't just targeted her; she was the architect of an industrial-scale infant abduction ring, using Briar Glen as her private hunting ground for heirs she could mold, control, and manipulate without resistance.

Peering through the wired glass of the neonatal nursery, Leah saw rows of plastic bassinets. In the center, bathed in the pale blue light of an automated monitor, lay her son—swaddled in the same pale blue blanket she had wrapped him in after birth.
And standing right beside his bassinet, holding a sleek black syringe, was Dr. Celia Rusk.
