Chapter 9 - The Morning After

-9-

The first golden rays of the January sun broke through the tall library windows, casting long, warm beams across the polished hardwood floors. The chaos of the night before—the gunfire, the shouting, the terror of the mercenary raid—felt like a lifetime away.

I stood by the French doors, looking out over the sprawling, manicured gardens of Belladonna House. The air was crisp and clean, purged of the stifling corruption that had choked these halls for decades.

A pair of heavy, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me gently against a solid, familiar chest. I didn't need to turn around to know it was Vincent. His scent—cedar, rain, and dark espresso—grounded me in a way nothing else ever had.

“You didn't sleep,” Vincent murmured, resting his chin softly against my shoulder.

“Neither did you,” I replied, leaning back into his embrace, letting my hands rest over his arms. “I was thinking about my mother. All those years she spent hiding in a small, cramped apartment, working two jobs, terrified that someone would find out who she was... she didn't know that the empire built on her family’s blood was crumbling from the inside.”

“She knew,” Vincent said softly, his voice carrying a deep, reverent weight. “People like your mother and your grandfather... they plant seeds in the dark, Elena. They don't always live to see the harvest. But the harvest came. And you were the one who reaped it.”

I turned around in his arms, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. The hardened mafia boss who had terrorized a ballroom full of politicians last night looked entirely different now—gentle, steadfast, and entirely present.

“What happens now, Vincent?” I asked quietly. “The engagement party is canceled. The DeMarcos are in federal custody. Belladonna House doesn't belong to a corrupt syndicate anymore. What is my place in all of this?”

Vincent reached up, his large, calloused hand gently tracing the edge of the silver locket on my chest, his thumb brushing against my collarbone.

“Whatever you want it to be,” Vincent said without hesitation. “This estate belongs to the Vance and Moretti bloodlines now. You are the rightful keeper of the master ledger, the heir to the South Docks, and the only person in this city who holds absolute authority over everything we built.”

He paused, a rare, vulnerable hesitation flickering in his eyes before he continued.

“And as for me... I spent my entire life preparing for a war of vengeance. Now that the war is over, I realize I don't want to rule alone. Not anymore.”

My heart skipped a beat, a warm, fluttering sensation blooming in my chest that had nothing to do with adrenaline or survival.

“Are you offering me a partnership, Vincent Moretti?” I asked with a faint, teasing smile.

May you like

“I’m offering you everything,” Vincent whispered, leaning down until his lips hovered mere inches from mine. “If you’ll have me.”

I didn't answer with words. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, certain kiss that sealed not just our alliance, but our future.
