Chapter 11 - Shadows on the Horizon

-11-
The afternoon sun filtered softly through the stained-glass windows of the Belladonna House conservatory, casting vibrant splashes of red, blue, and gold across the marble tea table. I sat across from Special Agent Marcus Vance, reviewing a final dossier stamped CLASSIFIED - EYES ONLY.
The federal prosecution against Julian DeMarco was moving swiftly toward a guilty plea, backed by the impenetrable financial ledger we had unlocked from the sub-vault. Julian’s political allies had abandoned him entirely, distancing themselves from the scandal like rats fleeing a sinking ship.
Agent Vance closed his leather portfolio, setting it neatly on the table. “Julian is facing forty years without parole. His assets are completely frozen, and the DeMarco real estate holdings have been absorbed into the city’s public trust. As far as the legal system is concerned, the syndicate is dead.”
“As far as the legal system is concerned,” Vincent repeated, stepping out from the shadow of the arched doorway with a dark look in his eyes. He walked over, standing beside my chair with his hand resting lightly on my shoulder. “But syndicates don't just disappear, Agent Vance. They mutate.”
Agent Vance frowned, looking up at Vincent. “What are you talking about? We traced every offshore account linked to Vanguard Global. There are no active nodes left in the domestic sector.”
“Domestic, no,” Vincent agreed quietly. He reached into his coat and placed a single encrypted flash drive on the table between us. “Three days ago, our security servers intercepted an encrypted ping originating from a maritime server off the coast of Marseille. It wasn't a financial transaction. It was a data packet pinging the M-17 biological research archives your agency thought were destroyed back in Prague fifteen years ago.”
My breath hitched. The name M-17 sent a sudden, chilling echo down my spine—the exact same classified biological sequence my father had died protecting, and the genetic marker my mother had hidden within our lineage.
“Project Janus,” I whispered, looking up at Vincent. “I thought that died with the research teams.”
“So did I,” Vincent said grimly. “It seems Julian DeMarco wasn't the head of the snake. He was just a regional manager for a much larger, global consortium that operates above governments and beyond federal courts.”
Agent Vance picked up the flash drive, his expression turning grave. “If Project Janus is still active overseas, they won't stop until they recover the primary activation keys—which means they’re coming for you, Elena.”
“Let them come,” I said, standing up from the table, my voice carrying the unyielding strength of my grandfather’s legacy. “They tried hiding behind politicians and engagement parties, and we dismantled them in a night. If they want to bring the war to our doorstep, we’ll be waiting.”

Vincent pulled me close against his side, his dark eyes burning with absolute, terrifying resolve.
“They think they can hunt the keepers of the ledger,” Vincent said softly. “They have no idea what happens when you wake the wolves.”
