Chapter 14 - The Final Key

Jean-Luc Moreau stared at me as if he were looking back through a time machine straight into the nightmares of his past. The color drained from his weathered face, leaving him looking like a fragile old man trapped in the ruins of his own global conspiracy.
“You... you’re Marcus Vance’s granddaughter,” Moreau whispered, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the glass console. “The genetic ledger... it wasn't destroyed in Prague. You have it.”
“I am the ledger,” I said coldly, walking up the steel stairs to the glass observation platform, stopping just six feet away from him. Vincent followed closely behind, keeping his weapon trained steadily on the old man’s chest.
Moreau let out a dry, ragged laugh, shaking his head. “You think killing me—you think destroying this server—stops anything? Project Janus isn't just a file in a computer, child. It’s an idea. A network of powerful men across three continents who believe human evolution can be engineered, bought, and controlled.”
“Then we’ll burn the network down to the foundations, one continent at a time,” Vincent said, stepping forward. He reached out, grabbed the master encryption drive plugged into Moreau’s terminal, and yanked it violently out of the port.
The main screens behind Moreau flickered, flashed a brilliant, blinding red warning across every monitor, and then went completely black.
SYSTEM PURGE COMPLETE, the automated voice echoed through the silent warehouse. ALL DATA IRRETRIEVABLY ERASED.
Moreau slumped back into his ergonomic leather chair, defeated, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. “You’ve... you’ve just declared war on the most powerful men in the world.”
“We didn't declare the war, Moreau,” I said, looking down at him with absolute, unyielding calm. “We just finished it.”
Before Moreau could speak another word, heavy tactical boots echoed up the exterior stairwell of the warehouse. The metal doors burst open, and French national police tactical units—coordinating directly with Agent Vance’s federal team back in the States—poured into the room, their weapons raised.
“Jean-Luc Moreau, you are under arrest for international racketeering, biological terrorism, and crimes against humanity,” the lead French officer shouted, stepping forward and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around the old man’s wrists.

As Moreau was hauled away into the Mediterranean night, his head bowed in absolute defeat, Vincent and I stood side by side on the glass observation platform, watching the dark, silent server racks power down one by one.
The storm was finally over. The ghosts of the past had been laid to rest.
