Chapter 4 - The Trap Springs Open

4 - 15

"A bank statement?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling so violently that the hot tea sloshed over the rim of her ceramic mug, staining the wooden tabletop. "What... what are you talking about, Mr. Cross? What money?"

Damian watched her intently, analyzing every micro-movement. The shock in her eyes was too raw, too visceral to be faked. No actress on earth could simulate the absolute horror of a mother realizing she was being framed for a crime she didn't even understand.

"An account at Hudson Valley Trust," Damian said steadily. "Five thousand dollars deposited three weeks ago from an offshore entity called Sterling Holdings. The same entity linked to Vanessa's corporate network."

Elena set her mug down with a sharp clatter, her hands flying to her mouth. Tears welled instantly in her dark eyes, spilling over her lashes as her knees buckled slightly against the edge of the table.

"I don't have an account at Hudson Valley Trust," she choked out, her voice breaking. "I have one small savings account at the local credit union where my paycheck goes. Five thousand dollars? Mr. Cross, I don't even have five hundred dollars to my name unless I skip rent! Why would anyone... how could anyone..."

She couldn't finish the sentence. The reality of what the dossier meant was crashing down on her with terrifying clarity. If Damian believed the documents, she wasn't just a housekeeper who had endured insults; she was an accomplice to corporate espionage. She could lose her job, her home, her reputation, and—worst of all—if Vanguard’s legal team got involved, she could lose custody of Mia.

"Look at me, Elena," Damian said firmly, stepping closer and placing a steadying hand on the edge of the table between them.

Elena lifted her tear-stained face, looking up into his piercing dark eyes.

"I don't believe it," Damian said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "If I believed you were working with them, I wouldn't be standing in your kitchen at ten o'clock at night discussing it. I would have had federal marshals at your door an hour ago."

Elena let out a ragged, shuddering breath, a sob catching in her throat as the overwhelming relief collided with her lingering terror. "Thank you... oh, thank you, Mr. Cross. I swear to you on my daughter’s life, I didn't know anything about any accounts, I never took a dime from anyone except my weekly salary—"

"I know," Damian interrupted softly. "Which means Vanessa didn't just plant evidence against me. She built an elaborate scapegoat mechanism, and your name was written at the bottom of page thirty-two."

He reached into his pocket again, pulling out a printed hardcopy of the fraudulent bank record from the flash drive and sliding it across the table toward her.

"Look at the account number, Elena. Is that yours?"

Elena wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her sweater, leaning over the paper. She squinted at the string of digits, tracing them with a trembling finger. "No. No, look at the last four digits... 8904. That's not my account number. My credit union account ends in 3120."

"And look at the signature on the authorization card attached to the statement," Damian pointed out, tapping a spot near the bottom margin.

Elena leaned in closer. The signature bore her name—Elena Reyes—written in neat, flowing cursive. But as she stared at it, a frown creased her brow.

"This isn't my handwriting," she whispered, shaking her head. "Look at the way the 'R' is looped. I always cross my capital Rs with a straight slash. This one curves upward like a hook. And... and look at the address listed for the account."

Damian leaned in. "What about it?"

"It’s an apartment on Maple Street in Poughkeepsie," Elena said, her eyes widening. "I haven't lived on Maple Street in five years. That was the address of the apartment I shared with my ex-husband before he walked out on us and stopped paying child support."

The pieces fell into place with terrifying precision. Vanessa hadn't just picked a random name out of the staff directory. She had dug into Elena's past, found an old, abandoned address, forged a signature using historical records, and opened a shadow account designed to look like a secret stash for corporate payoffs.

"She was planning this for months," Damian muttered, his jaw tightening into a hard line. "Long before the wedding invitations were even printed, she was setting up collateral damage in case her primary operation went sideways."

"What do we do?" Elena asked, looking up at him, her fear replaced by a fierce, protective maternal instinct. "If she has access to forged bank records, what's to stop her from going to the authorities first? What if the police come here?"

"They won't," Damian said, his voice dropping into a cold, reassuring register. "Because by the time the sun comes up tomorrow, Victor and his team will have seized every server, every hard drive, and every communication log linked to Vanessa's network. She won't have time to file a complaint against a housekeeper. She'll be too busy trying to stay out of a federal penitentiary."

He stood up, towering over the small table, his presence filling the cozy room with an undeniable aura of protection and power.

"Lock your doors tonight, Elena," Damian instructed, his dark eyes holding hers. "Don't open them for anyone except me or Victor. Tomorrow morning, we're going to dismantle everything she built—root and branch."

Elena nodded slowly, swallowing hard. "I understand, Mr. Cross. Thank you."

Damian turned toward the door, his hand resting on the brass knob. He paused, looking back over his shoulder at the young mother standing beside her daughter's crayon drawings.

"And Elena?"

"Yes, Mr. Cross?"

May you like

"Don't call me Mr. Cross anymore," he said quietly, a faint, ghost of a smile touching the corner of his lips. "At least not when we're off the clock."

Before she could reply, the door clicked shut, and he vanished into the cool night air, leaving Elena alone in the quiet cottage with the echoes of a storm that was only just beginning to break.
