Chapter 11 - The Vault Beneath the Floorboards

11 - 15

The heavy iron door of the subterranean vault hissed softly as it swung open, releasing a cool gust of purified air into the dimly lit corridor beneath the main library.

Damian led the way down the reinforced concrete steps, carrying a sleeping Mia wrapped tightly in her blanket against his shoulder. Elena followed closely behind, her boots echoing softly against the steel-plated floor.

The panic room was far from the sterile, claustrophobic bunker Elena had imagined. It was a spacious, wood-paneled subterranean study outfitted with leather armchairs, a bank of high-resolution security monitors glowing softly in the dark, and a massive mahogany desk equipped with an independent, military-grade satellite terminal. Thick steel bulkheads lined the perimeter—impenetrable to fire, explosives, and external signal jamming.

"Set her down on the cot in the corner," Damian instructed quietly, pointing toward a neatly made leather daybed against the far wall.

Elena gently laid Mia down, tucking the wool blanket around her shoulders. The toddler didn't even stir, exhausted by the emotional turbulence of the past two days.

As Elena straightened up, she turned to see Damian already seated at the reinforced mahogany terminal, inserting the newly recovered cryptographic flash drive into an isolated USB port.

Blink. Blink. Blink.

The terminal screen flashed a series of crimson warning lights before a massive decryption progress bar materialized across the display.

"Is it locked?" Elena asked, walking over and standing just behind his shoulder, her hands resting nervously on the back of his leather chair.

"Not anymore," Damian muttered, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. "Vanessa's drive had a standard enterprise-grade encryption. This one... this is military-spec. It requires a dual-factor biometric and cryptographic key."

"Can you bypass it?"

"I built this terminal's security architecture myself," Damian replied with a cold, confident smirk. "Give me thirty seconds."

Click.

The crimson warning lights abruptly shifted to a steady, glowing emerald green.

The screen flickered, and a massive folder structure unrolled across the display, labeled: PROJECT_JANUS_FINAL_ARCHIVE.

Damian clicked on the primary document. It wasn't a corporate spreadsheet or a land deed. It was a high-definition video file, dated just four days ago, recorded from an underground security feed in Geneva, Switzerland.

"Watch the screen," Damian murmured, his voice dropping into a grave register.

Elena leaned in closer, her breath catching in her throat as the video began to play.

The footage showed a sleek, modern boardroom in a Swiss high-rise. Seated at the head of the polished glass table wasn't Marcus Sterling, and it wasn't Vanessa Hail. It was a man with sharp, aristocratic features, silver hair combed straight back, and piercing ice-blue eyes that seemed to stare right through the camera lens.

"Julian Vance," Damian whispered, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek.

"Who is he?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"My uncle," Damian replied coldly. "The man who supposedly died in a private plane crash off the coast of Marseille twenty-five years ago—and the former primary shareholder of Cross Industrial before my father took over the company."

On the screen, Julian Vance leaned forward, resting his hands on the glass table, and began to speak in a crisp, chillingly polite British accent.

"If you're watching this recording, Damian, it means my little theatrical production with Vanessa and the Vanguard board has successfully reached its final phase," Julian’s voice echoed from the terminal speakers, smooth and mocking. "For twenty-five years, I've watched you sit on a throne built on stolen ground—enjoying the wealth, the power, and the estate that rightfully belonged to the Vance family. And more importantly... the land that belonged to the Reyes bloodline."

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "The Reyes bloodline? He knows about my grandfather?"

"Oh, she knows more than just history," Julian continued on the screen, a cruel smile touching his lips. "Vanessa thought she was working for Vanguard. But Vanguard was just my proxy. Every forged bank statement, every land covenant, every corporate leak was designed for one singular purpose: to prove that the Cross empire was built on fraud, and that the true rightful heir to the entire four-hundred-acre estate isn't Damian Cross at all..."

May you like

Julian paused for dramatic effect, his ice-blue eyes gleaming with malicious triumph.

"...it's Elena Reyes."
