Chapter 13 - Dawn Over the Alps

13 - 15

The first pale streaks of grey dawn crept over the rugged peaks of the Swiss Alps, casting a freezing, ethereal glow across the manicured lawns of an isolated, ultra-secure corporate compound outside Geneva. Inside the master study of the villa, Julian Vance sat in a plush leather armchair, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch as he watched the live satellite feeds of the Hudson Valley estate on his private terminal.

His ice-blue eyes narrowed as he noticed the perimeter security grid flickering offline.

"Fascinating," Julian murmured to himself, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "The boy is fighting back. He actually thinks he can salvage the empire."

He reached out to touch the console to zoom in on the staff cottage feed, expecting to see Damian trapped in the dark. But before his fingers could graze the glass screen, the entire terminal instantly went completely black.

Blink.

A single crimson word flashed across every monitor in the room: OVERRIDE.

Julian frowned, sitting up straighter in his chair. "What is this?"

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of his private study blew inward with a deafening crash, splintering into a thousand pieces against the stone walls.

Three heavily armed tactical operatives in matte-black gear surged into the room, their weapons raised and laser sights locked dead on Julian’s chest.

Before Julian could even reach for the panic button concealed beneath his desk, a tall, imposing figure stepped calmly through the shattered doorway.

Damian Cross wore a tailored black coat, his collar turned up against the freezing alpine air, his dark eyes burning with a cold, absolute fury. Behind him walked Victor Vance, carrying a heavy metal briefcase, followed closely by Elena Reyes, who held little Mia safely wrapped in a warm coat against her shoulder.

Julian stared at them, his scotch glass slipping from his fingers to shatter against the Persian rug, the amber liquid pooling like blood across the fabric.

"D-Damian?" Julian stammered, his aristocratic composure finally shattering into jagged pieces. "How... how did you bypass the Swiss encryption grid? That firewall was impenetrable!"

Damian walked slowly across the room, stopping just two feet away from Julian’s desk. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

"You made one fatal mistake, Uncle Julian," Damian said, his voice dropping into a deadly, measured calm. "You assumed that because my grandfather built this empire on ruthless ambition, I would operate with the same blind arrogance."

Julian forced a nervous, brittle laugh, leaning back in his chair as he tried to regain his footing. "You think walking in here with a private security detail changes anything? Legally, this estate belongs to the Reyes bloodline! The courts will tear your empire apart brick by brick—"

"The courts won't have to," Elena stepped forward, her voice ringing clear and steady through the ruined study. She set Mia down gently behind Victor, stepping right up to the edge of the desk to look Julian dead in the eye.

Julian blinked, looking at the housekeeper with sudden, unmasked confusion. "You... you're just a servant. You don't understand the legal framework—"

"I understand that my grandfather’s name was stolen by men like you," Elena interrupted, her voice burning with a fierce, quiet dignity that made even the tactical operatives take notice. "And I understand that no amount of forged bank statements or corporate shell companies will ever change the fact that my family’s legacy isn't for sale."

Damian reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick stack of certified legal documents, and slammed them down hard onto the mahogany desk right in front of Julian.

"Those are the global asset-freezing orders signed by the Swiss Federal Tribunal an hour ago," Damian said, leaning over the desk until his face was inches from Julian's. "Every offshore account, every shell company, every penny of Vanguard’s liquidity has been seized under international anti-fraud statutes."

Julian stared at the papers, his face draining of all color, his lips trembling as the absolute reality of his defeat washed over him. "You... you can't do this. I'm a Vance—"

"You're a ghost," Damian corrected coldly. "And your twenty-five-year vacation is officially over."

May you like

He gestured to the tactical operatives, who stepped forward, roughly hauling Julian out of his leather armchair and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As Julian was dragged screaming and cursing out of the study, Damian turned back to Elena. The morning sun broke fully over the snowy alpine peaks, casting a warm, golden light through the shattered windows, illuminating a future that was finally, completely their own.
