Chapter 9 - The Healing Room

Three weeks later, the private recovery suite at Mount Sinai Hospital felt less like a medical ward and more like a sanctuary.
The afternoon sun streamed warmly through large floor-to-ceiling windows, casting golden patterns across a hardwood floor that Alexander had specially requested the hospital install to replace the sterile linoleum. Fresh white lilies sat in a crystal vase on the nightstand, filling the air with a soft, clean fragrance.
Lauren sat propped up against a stack of plush pillows in the adjustable bed. Though she was still pale and fragile, color had finally returned to her cheeks, and her eyes—once dull and sunken—shone with a quiet, resilient light.
Sophia sat curled up in an armchair beside the bed, deeply engrossed in a coloring book, her messy braid replaced by a neat, ribbon-tied ponytail.
The door opened softly, and Alexander walked in carrying a tray with a bowl of homemade chicken soup and a warm cup of herbal tea. He was dressed in a simple cotton shirt and slacks, completely shedding the thousand-dollar suits that had once defined his identity as a corporate warrior.
"How are we feeling in here?" Alexander asked gently, setting the tray down on the rolling over-bed table and leaning over to press a tender kiss to Lauren’s forehead.
Lauren smiled, resting her hand over his. "Much better, Alex. Dr. Vance says if I keep eating your illicit contraband hospital-sneaked brownies, I might actually be discharged by next week."
Alexander chuckled softly, pulling up a chair beside the bed. "I’ll bribe the entire nursing staff if I have to. You're not going back to that apartment—not ever."
Lauren’s smile faltered slightly, a shadow of the past lingering in her eyes. "Have you... heard anything about Victoria and Arthur?"
Alexander’s expression hardened, though his voice remained calm. "The preliminary hearings concluded this morning. Julian and the federal prosecutors presented the audio recordings, the bank routing trails showing the stolen trust funds, and the medical records from your admission."
He paused, letting out a slow breath.
"Arthur flipped immediately, trying to plea-bargain his way out of a prison sentence by turning state's evidence against Mother. He’s facing five to ten years for conspiracy and financial fraud."
"And Victoria?" Lauren asked softly.
"Victoria refused to speak a single word during her arraignment," Alexander replied, shaking his head. "Her lawyers tried to claim the audio was illegally obtained and that she was of unsound mind. The judge rejected the motion instantly. She’s being held without bail at Rikers Island pending trial."
A heavy silence settled over the room for a moment. Lauren looked down at her hands, her fingers tracing the silver wedding band that Alexander had slipped back onto her finger the day she woke up in the ICU.
"It feels like a nightmare," Lauren whispered. "Three years of hiding... three years of wondering if we’d survive the next week... all because she couldn't accept that we wanted a life outside of her control."
Alexander reached out, cupping her face in his hands and forcing her to look into his eyes.
"It’s over, Lauren. I promise you," Alexander said, his voice thick with emotion. "I spent my whole life trying to earn my mother’s approval, trying to build a bigger empire, trying to prove I was worthy of the Sterling name. And I almost lost the only things that ever truly mattered."
He looked over at Sophia, who looked up from her coloring book and flashed her father a bright, gap-toothed smile.
"We are going to walk away from all of it," Alexander continued, looking back at his wife. "I'm resigning as CEO of Sterling Developments. We’re liquidating whatever personal assets remain after the legal restitution, packing our bags, and moving far away from New York. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere real."
Lauren’s eyes welled with tears of profound relief. She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him into a long, desperate embrace.

"Just the three of us?" she whispered against his shoulder.
"Just the three of us," Alexander promised.
