Chapter 7 - The Dawn of Retaliation

-7-

The first rays of pale morning light were just beginning to crest over the East River when Alexander unlocked the double doors of his sprawling, minimalist penthouse on Fifth Avenue.

The apartment was vast, sterile, and eerily quiet. For three years, this multi-million-dollar sky-palace had felt like a tomb—a monument to his supposed abandonment. Now, looking at the pristine white leather sofas and the towering glass walls overlooking Central Park, Alexander felt only disgust.

A sharp knock echoed through the foyer.

Alexander pulled the door open. Julian Thorne, senior partner of Sterling’s legal division and the most feared corporate litigator in New York, stood on the threshold. Julian was impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, despite the ungodly hour, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

"Alexander," Julian said, stepping inside and brushing a stray drop of rain from his lapel. "Your assistant said it was an absolute emergency. What’s going on? Rumors are already swirling from the Grand Plaza Hotel gala last night about some sort of altercation between you and your brother—"

"Forget the gala," Alexander interrupted, turning on his heel and walking toward the wet bar. He poured two fingers of neat bourbon into a crystal glass and swallowed it in one burn. "Julian, I need you to initiate a total, hostile corporate restructuring of Sterling Developments, effective immediately."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, staring at him in disbelief. "Restructuring? Alex, you own forty-two percent of the voting shares, but your mother holds thirty-eight percent, and the remaining blocks are split among the board. You can't just restructure a billion-dollar conglomerate on a whim without board approval."

"I can if I have leverage that invalidates every single share my mother owns," Alexander said coldly, walking over to the coffee table and tossing a small digital voice recorder onto the glass surface.

Julian frowned, walking over to pick up the device. "What is this?"

"Listen to it," Alexander instructed, crossing his arms over his chest.

Julian pressed play.

Victoria’s cold, arrogant voice filled the silent penthouse, recounting her systematic plot to ruin Lauren, starve Sophia, embezzle trust funds, and launder the stolen capital into corporate land acquisitions.

As the recording played on, Julian’s professional composure dissolved entirely. His jaw went slack, and his eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he listened to the matriarch of the Sterling dynasty confess to financial fraud, extortion, child endangerment, and psychological abuse.

When the recording finally clicked off, Julian stared at the recorder as if it were a venomous snake.

"My God," Julian whispered, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "If this goes public... the SEC, the Department of Justice, the state attorney general... it won't just ruin Victoria. It will completely annihilate Sterling Developments. Our stock will plummet to zero before the opening bell."

"That's the plan," Alexander replied flatly.

Julian looked up, horrified. "Alex, you’re the CEO! If the company collapses, your personal net worth goes down with it. You'll lose everything!"

"Let it burn," Alexander repeated the words with absolute, terrifying conviction. "I don't care about the money anymore, Julian. I care about destroying the foundation my mother built on the bones of my wife and child. Now, here is what we are going to do..."

Alexander leaned over the coffee table, laying out a meticulous, ruthless battle plan.

"First, you are going to file an emergency ex-parte motion with the New York Supreme Court freezing all personal and corporate assets controlled by Victoria Sterling and Arthur Sterling under suspicion of grand larceny and embezzlement of minor trust funds."

Julian nodded slowly, his lawyer's instincts kicking in as he realized the legal brilliance of the trap. "We can argue that the monthly wire transfers constituted a protected fiduciary trust for a minor beneficiary, meaning Victoria’s diversion of those funds into corporate accounts constitutes federal wire fraud."

"Exactly," Alexander said. "Second, you are going to prepare a criminal referral package for the Manhattan DA containing this audio file, bank statements, and medical reports from Mount Sinai Hospital detailing my daughter's malnutrition and my wife's poisoning."

Julian swallowed hard. "And your mother?"

"My mother," Alexander said, his eyes turning to ice, "is going to receive a personal invitation to this penthouse at ten o'clock this morning. And when she arrives, she won't be meeting with her loving son. She’ll be meeting a team of federal marshals."
