Chapter 8 - The Trap is Set

-8-
By 9:45 AM, the Manhattan sky had cleared into a brilliant, crisp autumn morning, but inside the executive boardroom of Sterling Developments on Park Avenue, the atmosphere was thick with rising panic.
Victoria Sterling sat at the head of the polished mahogany conference table, her fingers drumming an impatient, rhythmic tattoo against the wood. She was flanked by Arthur, who looked pale, nauseous, and perpetually on the verge of a panic attack.
"He hasn't answered his phone all morning," Arthur stammered, pacing nervously behind his mother's chair. "Mother, if Alexander actually went to the police... if he releases that recording..."
"Calm down, Arthur!" Victoria snapped, her voice sharp as glass. She adjusted her diamond brooch, though her hands trembled slightly despite her best efforts to maintain composure. "Alexander is emotional, but he is a Sterling. He cares about this company, he cares about our family legacy, and he cares about his own bank account above all else. He’s throwing a tantrum because he found out about the girl. We will negotiate. We always negotiate."
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom suddenly swung open.
Victoria straightened her posture, assuming her mask of cold authority, expecting her eldest son to walk in looking chastised and ready to bargain.
Instead, Julian Thorne walked through the door.
Julian wasn't alone. Flanking him on either side were two men in dark suits with federal insignia pinned to their lapels—Special Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White-Collar Crime Division.
Victoria froze. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin looking like aged parchment.
"Julian," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "What is the meaning of this? Who are these men?"
Julian didn't smile. He stepped aside, holding a thick manila folder stamped with emergency judicial seals, and laid it directly on the center of the conference table.
"Victoria Sterling, Arthur Sterling," Julian said formally, his voice echoing in the silent boardroom. "By order of the New York State Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, all corporate and personal assets under your control, including your primary holdings in Sterling Developments, are hereby frozen pending a federal criminal investigation into grand larceny, wire fraud, embezzlement of minor trust funds, and child endangerment."
Arthur let out a choked cry, collapsing into a leather chair and burying his face in his hands. "No... no, this isn't happening..."
Victoria stood up slowly, her eyes narrowing into venomous slits. She looked at Julian with pure hatred. "You traitorous little parasite. Alexander thinks he can overthrow me with a childish stunt? I built this empire before he was even drawing breath! Where is he? Bring my son to me right now!"
"Your son is currently at Mount Sinai Hospital with his wife and daughter," Julian replied calmly, unfazed by her legendary fury. "And he instructed me to give you a very specific message."
Victoria glared at him. "What message?"
Julian opened the manila folder, pulled out a single sheet of paper containing a printed transcript of the voice recording, and slid it across the table toward her.
"He said to remind you," Julian said quietly, "that when you spend your entire life building a throne out of other people's misery... don't be surprised when the fire finally consumes it."
The federal agents stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
"Victoria Sterling, you have the right to remain silent..."
As the cold metal clicked around the wrists of the most powerful matriarch in New York real estate, Victoria didn't scream or beg. She simply stared straight ahead, her eyes burning with a cold, unyielding malice that proved she still didn't understand what she had lost.
May you like
She had won every corporate war, crushed every rival, and sacrificed her own blood for the sake of the empire.
And in the end, it had all been worth absolutely nothing.
