Chapter 5 - THE APOLOGY THEY NEVER WANTED

-5-

The lobby of Harrison Tower was usually a sterile, peaceful sanctuary of polished granite, indoor bamboo gardens, and quiet murmurs of international finance. Today, however, it was a war zone.

Over fifty journalists, camera operators, and tabloid reporters had crammed past the security turnstiles, tipped off by an anonymous press release from Harrison Technologies’ public relations department. Flashbulbs strode relentlessly, casting a blinding, chaotic strobe light across the towering glass atrium as the heavy oak elevators chimed and the polished brass doors slid open.

Marcus Vance led the way, clearing a wide, aggressive path through the sea of shouting reporters. Behind him, flanked by four tactical guards, walked Richard, Clarissa, and Brandon Sterling.

The fall of the House of Sterling was premiering live on national television.

"Mr. Sterling! Is it true that Sterling Enterprises is facing total liquidation?" shouted a reporter from the Wall Street Journal thrusting a microphone forward.

"Mrs. Sterling! Do you have any comment on your son's engagement ending due to a multi-million-dollar fraud scandal?" yelled a tabloid photographer, shoving a camera lens inches from Clarissa’s tear-streaked face.

Clarissa shrieked, shielding her face with her manicured hands, stumbling blindly over her own heels as she tried to avoid the blinding light. Brandon kept his head bowed low against his chest, his designer suit looking like it had been slept in for a week, weeping silently as flashbulbs recorded every humiliating second of his public execution.

From the 80th-floor executive mezzanine, standing safely behind a one-way ballistic glass balcony, I watched the spectacle unfold below.

My father stood a few paces behind me, holding a crystal tumbler of sparkling water with a slice of lemon. He took a slow sip, his eyes tracking the chaotic scene in the lobby with detached amusement.

"A bit harsh, Evangeline?" my father asked quietly, not looking at me. "Playing it out in front of the national press?"

I crossed my arms over my chest, watching Brandon trip over the revolving glass doors as security physically tossed him out onto the snowy Manhattan sidewalk.

"Harsh?" I asked, turning my head to look at my father. "Dad, they spent thirty years believing that wealth and status gave them the divine right to crush anyone who didn't fit their narrow definition of acceptable humanity. They didn't just insult me; they humiliated hundreds of people before me who didn't have a multi-trillion-dollar safety net to catch them."

My father smiled, a warm, proud expression softening his stern features. He reached out and gently squeezed my shoulder. "You're entirely right, Evangeline. You handled that with more restraint than I would have. When I saw the livestream of that woman striking your face... I was ready to call an airstrike on the entire hotel block."

"Well, freezing their bank accounts and bankrupting their entire lineage is a good start," I chuckled, taking a sip from my own glass.

My phone buzzed in my pantsuit pocket. I pulled it out, glancing at the screen. It was an unknown mobile number, accompanied by a frantic string of text messages.

“Evangeline, please! Pick up the phone! I know you're up there! I know it was all a test, I know you're a Harrison! Please, just give me five minutes to explain!”

Another text followed immediately:

“We can still be together! We can announce the wedding properly! Dad says we can salvage the company if you just talk to your father! Evangeline, please! I love you!”

I stared at the glowing screen, watching Brandon’s pathetic desperation pinging my phone from the cold New York sidewalk just outside the lobby doors.

With a calm, steady motion, I tapped the screen, blocked the number, and then archived the chat thread forever.

"Who is it?" my father asked, noticing my expression.

"Just a wrong number," I said, slipping the phone back into my pocket.

"Good," my father said, turning back toward the private executive elevator. "Because you have a 2:00 PM strategic planning meeting with the board of directors. As of today, you are officially stepping into your role as Executive Vice President of Global Operations. No more secret identities. No more yellow dresses."

May you like

I followed my father toward the elevator, feeling the heavy, exhilarating weight of my true power settling over my shoulders.

The game of hiding in the shadows was over. From now on, I was going to write the rules.
