Chapter 2 - The Candy Game-2

The air in the hospital consultation room felt paper-thin.

Officer Elliott stepped closer, his boots squeaking softly against the linoleum as he leaned over my shoulder to watch the small screen. Officer Peters moved silently toward the doorway, positioning his body to block the exit.

On the video, Evelyn reached into the silver tin and pulled out a string of shiny, metallic spheres. They glinted under the dining room chandelier, looking remarkably like shiny silver candies.

Nancy looked up from her coloring book, her little voice captured clearly by the clock camera's omnidirectional microphone.

“Grandma, what's that?” Nancy’s recorded voice chirped on the speaker.

“It’s a secret game, sweetie,” Evelyn’s recorded voice replied smoothly on the video. She leaned in close to Nancy, whispering as if sharing a magical story. “These are magic silver fish. They’re shiny little candies that give you super powers. But you can only eat them if you promise not to tell your mother.”

“Will Mommy be mad?” Nancy asked, tilting her head.

“Mommy doesn't want you to have super powers,” Evelyn said on the screen, her face twisted into a sweet, coaxing smile. “Mommy wants to keep all the magic for herself. So every time Grandma gives you a silver fish, you have to swallow it whole like a big girl. If you chew it, the magic breaks.”

On the video, Evelyn separated three tiny silver spheres from the chain and handed them to Nancy. Nancy put them in her mouth and swallowed them with a sip of apple juice from her sippy cup.

Evelyn stroked Nancy’s cheek, handing her three more.

“Good girl,” Evelyn whispered on the recording. “Three for afternoon snack. Three for dinner. We’re going to fill your tummy with magic silver fish so you can grow big and strong.”

The clip ended as Evelyn closed the silver tin, slid it deep inside her designer handbag, and wiped Nancy’s mouth with a napkin.

Silence crashed over the room like a physical blow.

Brandon stood frozen, his eyes wide and vacant, staring at his mother as if she had suddenly transformed into a monster. His mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.

“Mom...?” Brandon finally managed to whisper, his voice cracking. “Mom... what... what was that?”

Evelyn was shaking, her face flushed dark crimson. Her hands were clutching her purse so tightly the seams looked ready to burst.

“It... it’s a fake!” Evelyn suddenly shrieked, her voice echoing off the sterile walls. “She forged it! Samantha built that video with artificial intelligence! She’s trying to frame me because she hates me! You know how much she’s always hated me, Brandon!”

Officer Elliott reached out and took my phone, placing it securely inside a clear plastic evidence bag.

“Mrs. Miller,” Officer Elliott said calmly to Evelyn. “That video feed was accessed directly from a secure cloud server with verified time stamps and cryptographic metadata. It cannot be altered in real-time.”

“No!” Evelyn screamed, backing away toward the wall. “I love my granddaughter! I would never hurt her! I was just... I was just playing a game with her! They were supposed to pass right through her! I didn't know they were dangerous!”

Officer Peters stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Evelyn Miller,” Officer Peters said in a stern, unwavering tone. “You are under arrest for Aggravated Child Abuse, Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Minor, and Poisoning.”

“Brandon! Do something!” Evelyn wailed as Officer Peters pulled her arms behind her back and clicked the cuffs onto her wrists. “Brandon! I am your mother! Tell them to stop! Tell them she’s lying!”

Brandon didn't move. He didn't say a word. He stood there, staring at the floor, looking entirely hollowed out as his mother was escorted down the hallway in handcuffs, her hysterical screams fading into the distance of the hospital corridor.

I looked at Brandon, then walked past him without saying a single word, heading straight back to the pediatric recovery room to sit by my daughter’s side.
