Chapter 14 - The New Horizon-14

One year later.

The high-ceilinged gallery room of the San Diego Design Center was filled with light, music, and vibrant colors. Over two hundred guests, interior designers, and local business leaders browsed the room, admiring the framed digital artwork, sustainable architectural models, and custom wooden home installations displayed along the white walls.

It was the grand opening of my new design studio: NEW HORIZON DESIGNS.

After two years of hard work, financial independence, and rebuilding my professional career, I had transformed my passion for residential interior architecture into a thriving, sought-after business in Southern California.

Marcus Vance stood near the catering table, holding a champagne glass, chatting warmly with Detective Sarah Jenkins and Detective Mark Torres, who had both remained close friends of our family.

I stood near the entrance wearing an elegant emerald-green dress, welcoming guests with a genuine, glowing smile.

At the center display table sat seven-year-old Nancy, wearing a pretty yellow dress, proudly handing out printed studio brochures to visiting guests. She had grown so much over the past year—tall, confident, smart, and filled with an infectious, joyful energy.

Marcus walked over to me, handing me a glass of sparkling water.

“Congratulations, Samantha,” Marcus smiled warmly. “The gallery looks extraordinary. Your father would be so unbelievably proud of you today.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, my eyes misting with happy tears as I hugged him. “I couldn't have built any of this without your guidance.”

Detective Jenkins stepped over, offering a warm smile. “The District Attorney’s office called me this morning, Samantha. Evelyn’s final legal appeal was officially denied by the State Appellate Court today. The verdict stands permanently.”

I took a deep breath, letting the final lingering shadow of the past evaporate into the cool evening air.

“Thank you, Sarah,” I said softly. “The past is behind us now. We’re looking forward.”

Nancy ran over to me, grabbing my hand, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Mommy! Look! Mr. Marcus helped me put my painting on the main wall!”

I walked over to the main gallery wall with my daughter.

Hanging in a beautiful oak frame was a vibrant watercolor painting Nancy had created last week. It showed a bright, golden sun rising over a deep blue ocean, with two figures—a mother and a daughter—holding hands as they walked along a clear, open path.

Below the painting, in neat gold lettering, was the title Nancy had chosen:

WALKING IN THE LIGHT.

I knelt down beside my daughter, wrapped my arms around her, and kissed her forehead.

“It’s the most beautiful painting in the entire gallery, sweetie,” I whispered into her hair.

“Because we’re safe now, right Mommy?” Nancy asked softly, looking into my eyes with complete, unshakeable trust.

“We are safe, my sweet girl,” I promised her, holding her tight against my heart. “We are completely safe.”
