Chapter 8 - THE LETTER MATTHEW WROTE FROM PRISON

-8

Matthew wrote me seventeen months after sentencing.

I did not open for six weeks.

The envelope sat on desk.

No urgency.

He no longer controlled timing.

Finally, therapist asked:

“What are you afraid letter will do?”

“Make me feel sorry.”

“And?”

“I don’t want.”

“Why?”

“Because he killed Daniel.”

She corrected gently:

“He was convicted of reckless homicide, not intentional murder.”

I hated precision.

But mattered.

He caused death.

Intent contested.

Could feel pity without changing.

I opened.

Emma,

I have written this fifty times.

Not promising start.

Then:

I am not asking forgiveness.

Better.

He wrote about George.

Father's business.

How Matthew began working at fifteen.

Daniel left for college.

Matthew stayed.

George taught:

“Clients never understand back office. That’s why professionals make decisions.”

Authority.

When George shifted fees, Matthew rationalized.

After inheritance, Matthew wanted preserve.

Evelyn expanded.

Money grew.

He liked.

Lake house.

Status.

Then Daniel found.

Matthew felt judged by brother who benefited indirectly.

He wrote:

I believed he would destroy Mom’s care, my children’s future, Dad’s name, Meridian jobs, and everything I had built.

Then:

I now understand “everything I had built” included money that was not mine.

Specific.

Then car.

He wrote:

I asked Paul to create a mechanical problem because I wanted Daniel to miss the meeting and become afraid enough to stop.

I had told myself this was not violence because I was not touching him.

That sentence.

Control by proxy.

Then:

When Daniel texted about warning light, I knew.

I could have told him not to drive.

I did not.

My blood froze.

This was new detail emotionally, though prosecution had maybe.

He saw warning and chose silence.

Then:

When I learned crash, I knew what I had caused before police called.

He drove to hospital? Daniel died at scene maybe.

Matthew arrived my house before officers? No, police came. Fine.

He wrote:

I went to your house after hearing from hospital liaison and stood across street because I did not know how to face you.

I did not know.

Then he entered later as grieving brother.

Then:

I told myself if I fixed benefits and kept investigation contained, Daniel’s death would not destroy more people.

But he did opposite.

He stole.

Why alter benefits?

Cash liquidity.

Legal defense.

Move funds before freeze.

Also suppress evidence via controlling estate.

Then:

I used your grief because you trusted me.

Specific.

Then:

I do not know which part is hardest to admit.

Then he mentioned Louise.

I will not write to her unless you decide someday it is appropriate.

Good.

Then:

Daniel was better than me.

I stopped.

No.

Hero comparison may deepen self-pity.

He continued:

But I think turning him into saint would make it easier for me to pretend we were simply different kinds of men. We weren’t. He benefited from our father’s money for years without asking enough questions. When he learned, he chose differently. I learned and chose to keep going.

That was insightful.

Then:

That choice is difference.

Yes.

Then he said:

I loved him.

I cried.

People want evil simple.

Matthew loved brother.

He also chose dangerous intimidation.

Love cannot be used as safety certificate.

Then final:

You do not owe me a reply.

I did not reply.

I told Louise eventually at age ten that Uncle Matthew wrote, apologized.

She asked:

“Do you believe?”

“Some.”

“Will you see him?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

Good.

Then Matthew’s children.

We hadn't mentioned. Did he have? He had wife/teen kids maybe. His crimes affected.

His wife, Rachel? Avoid conflict attorney name. Let's call Teresa. She divorced after arrest.

Their two sons, cousins to Louise.

They had no role.

I did not cut.

We arranged cousin visits through Teresa.

Children should not pay.

Teresa had known nothing about fraud.

She thought wealth legitimate.

Lost home due forfeiture.

She was angry.

Not at me ultimately.

We spoke.

“I hated Daniel for six months.”

What?

“Because I thought if he had kept quiet, my kids would still have house.”

Honest.

Then:

“I realized house wasn’t ours.”

Pain.

She got marital portion untainted.

Rebuilt.

She said:

“Matthew taught us to think exposure caused loss.”

Exactly.

No.

Fraud caused.

Then she asked:

“Do you hate Matthew?”

“Yes.”

“And love?”

“As family memory maybe.”

Complicated.

She understood.

Then Susan died.

Daniel and Matthew’s mother.

Peacefully.

Matthew requested attend funeral under guard? Prison furlough maybe denied. He sent letter.

We had memorial.

I spoke about Susan baking.

Not scandal.

Her estate modest after restitution.

Split grandchildren evenly through independent trusts.

No Carter Family Advisory.

Systems.

Matthew’s sons, Louise, Noah.

No family feuds.

Then Daniel’s name cleared fully at Meridian.

Company had initially put internal note:

employee departed deceased, active investigation misconduct? Maybe after he copied files, they accused data theft.

Regulator found whistleblower-protected.

Personnel record amended.

Meridian issued statement:

Daniel Carter’s internal concerns materially contributed to identification of wrongdoing.

Not hero marketing.

Good.

I took plaque? No.

They offered memorial conference room.

I declined.

Daniel hated meetings.

We laughed.

Instead, they funded compliance scholarship? I did not want name perhaps. But employees proposed independent whistleblower legal-support fund in his honor. I allowed modest.

Then formula/breastfeeding incident became footnote.

But for me, plane remained trigger.

First time we flew after, Noah was two.

I breastfed no longer.

Still.

Woman beside us smiled.

I tensed.

Louise noticed.

“She’s nice.”

“Yes.”

Then baby behind cried.

A man groaned.

I froze.

The baby's mother started apologizing.

I turned and said:

“You don’t have to apologize.”

Simple.

No speech.

Maybe this is future ending seed.

May you like

Then the mother smiled.

Healing in small moments.
