Chapter 14 - THE LAST FILE ON DANIEL’S TABLET

-14
I thought we had opened every file.
We had not.
Fifteen years after Daniel died, the digital-forensics archive was transferred from federal evidence storage back to family counsel because all appeals complete.
Samuel’s successor asked:
“Do you want personal files?”
“Yes.”
They separated evidence from family.
One encrypted file had never been opened because corruption.
Technology improved, recovery.
Filename:
AFTER.
I stared.
Louise was twenty-three.
Noah fifteen.
We watched together.
Daniel appeared in garage.
Not polished.
He looked tired.
Date:
Night before death.
My chest stopped.
He must have recorded after warning light, after Matthew.
“Okay.”
Daniel sighed.
“If I’m being dramatic, delete.”
Classic.
Then:
“I have a meeting tomorrow morning.”
We knew.
“With Agent Larkin.”
Then:
“Matthew knows more than I wanted him to know.”
He looked toward house.
“I should tell Emma.”
I whispered:
“Yes.”
He almost seemed hear.
“I keep saying that.”
Then:
“The truth is I’m scared she’ll make me stop.”
Louise looked at me.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Which is unfair, because maybe I need stopping.”
There.
Then:
“I have two kids.”
Noah unborn? Wait at date before death, Noah was 4 months old, yes born. He said:
“I have two kids and a wife who thinks I’m just grumpy at spreadsheets.”
He laughed.
Then:
“I don’t want to be brave if brave means stupid.”
My eyes filled.
Then he told plan:
After federal meeting, he would come home and tell me everything.
Tomorrow.
He died before.
One day.
Then:
“If something happens on drive…”
He stopped.
“God, listen to me.”
He had noticed car.
He planned dealer Monday but still drove.
Why not use other car?
My car maybe with me.
He thought warning minor.
Then:
“Matthew borrowed car and warning came after. I asked. He said nothing.”
He suspected.
Why drive?
He said:
“I’m taking surface roads, not interstate.”
But crash occurred on ramp? Maybe weather detour forced? Need consistency. Let's say accident on surface highway due closure? We earlier said highway. Could be he planned slower route, but weather led detour? Better not.
Video:
“I’ll drive slow.”
He underestimated.
Then:
“If Emma watches this, I’m sorry.”
His eyes filled.
“I’m sorry I made protection another word for not trusting you.”
That line.
I cried.
Then:
“You deserved to know.”
Yes.
Then:
“Louise, if you somehow crack this…”
She gasped.
Daniel smiled.
“Stop stealing my tablet.”
She laughed through sob.
“Noah…”
Daniel looked.
“You’re too little to understand any of this, which is probably healthiest person in family.”
Noah cried.
Then:
“Emma, whatever money is left, don’t let it turn kids into monuments to me.”
Wow.
“Let Louise hate math if she wants.”
She did.
“Let Noah become whatever.”
He looked.
“And please keep flying.”
My breath stopped.
“Do not let the last place you remember me become a road.”
He did not know plane incident.
But flying.
He knew I disliked after his death? We hadn't flown yet. Maybe he meant travel generally because I was nervous flyer. Fine.
Then:
“I love you.”
Screen ended.
No bombshell evidence.
Just apology.
The last file was not about fraud.
It was about us.
I sat with children.
Louise said:
“He knew.”
“Some.”
“He knew he should tell.”
“Yes.”
Noah:
“Why didn’t?”
“Fear.”
Same word.
Then Louise:
“Everyone in this family ruins things with fear.”
We laughed.
True.
Then I asked:
“Do you want keep?”
Copies.
Yes.
We did.
Then original tablet.
Physical device had sat evidence storage years.
Scratched.
Battery dead.
I got back.
Should we preserve?
Case over.
I considered museum? No.
I gave to Louise?
She shook.
“It was Dad’s secret thing. I don’t want.”
Noah no.
I recycled securely after copying personal files.
That shocked Mom.
“Really?”
“It’s a tablet.”
The truth no longer needs object.
Good.
Then Louise found gray rabbit.
Old.
Still.
She kept.
Not everything recycled.
Then I flew.
Alone.
For first time in years.
Window seat.
Woman beside me had baby.
Baby cried.
She apologized.
I smiled.
“Please don’t.”
Then she began nursing under cover, nervous.
She asked:
“Is this okay?”
I almost cried.
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Feed your baby.”
The sentence.
No lecture.
She fed.
The man across aisle glanced then looked away.
Normal.
No Evelyn.
No conspiracy.
Just infant.
I felt final layer loosen.
Then after landing, I texted Louise:
Sat next to breastfeeding mom.
She replied:
Did you yell bathroom?
I sent middle finger emoji.
She laughed.
Family humor.
Then she wrote:
Dad said keep flying.
I looked at video memory.
May you like
Yes.
I had.
