Chapter 7 - The Confession at Sunrise

7 - 15

The first gray streaks of dawn were beginning to bleed through the bulletproof glass of Matteo’s private study, casting long, somber shadows across the leather-bound bookshelves and the heavy mahogany desk. Piles of decrypted hospital files, encrypted flash drives, and financial ledgers lay scattered across the polished wood like the debris of a shipwreck.

In the center of the room sat Matteo, nursing a glass of dark amber bourbon that he hadn't touched in over an hour. Across from him sat Liana, wrapped in a heavy wool throw blanket provided by one of the female domestic staff. In a bassinet beside her chair, nine-month-old Nico was sleeping peacefully, his tiny chest rising and falling in steady rhythms.

The heavy oak door of the study swung open, and Marco stepped inside, placing a thick manila folder directly on the desk in front of Matteo.

"That’s all of them, Boss," Marco said grimly, his eyes darting briefly toward Liana before returning to Matteo. "Every birth record from St. Jude’s for the past year, cross-checked with Viktor’s offshore bank accounts and encrypted communications logs. The puzzle is complete."

Matteo opened the folder. He didn't look at the financial transactions or the encrypted server routing codes. He pulled out a single, pristine birth certificate and a pink hospital footprint record, sliding them across the desk toward Liana.

Liana’s hands shook as she picked up the paper.

Mother: Liana Graves.

Infant: Lucas Graves.

Date of Birth: Twenty-three days ago.

Status: Deceased (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome / Unclaimed Remains).

A single tear spilled over Liana’s lower eyelid, tracking down her cheek as she traced the inked footprint on the bottom of the page. "They lied to me," she whispered, her voice cracking with the raw, jagged pain of a wound ripped open anew. "They told me he died naturally. They gave me a tiny wooden box filled with dirt and pine shavings, and told me I was burying my son."

"They didn't just lie, Liana," Matteo said, his voice unusually gentle as he leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "They stole your child to create an insurance policy."

Liana looked up, her tear-filled eyes locking onto his dark gaze. "What are you talking about?"

"Viktor wasn't just a logistics manager," Matteo explained, tapping a finger against one of the decrypted financial ledgers. "For the past three years, a federal task force has been quietly building a RICO case against the Varric syndicate, using inside informants to chip away at our shipping ports. Viktor realized the Feds were getting too close. He needed leverage—absolute, unbreakable leverage that would force my father—and eventually me—to grant him immunity and half our overseas assets if the federal indictment came down."

Matteo pointed at the birth certificate in Liana’s hands.

"He needed a child born with a specific bloodline marker—a child whose DNA matched the inner-circle Varric lineage, yet whose existence was completely unknown to rival syndicates or federal investigators. He engineered the swap at St. Jude’s, taking my legitimate son—who was born in secret at a private Swiss clinic under my protection—and trading him for a healthy infant from an ordinary background, hiding my real son in plain sight while using yours as a secondary bargaining chip."

Liana stared at him, the horrifying magnitude of the conspiracy washing over her. "So... Nico isn't just your son. He’s the baby stolen from me."

"No," Matteo corrected softly, standing up from his desk and walking slowly around to her side of the room. He knelt beside her chair, looking up into her face with an intensity that stole the breath right out of her lungs. "Nico is our son. The hospital swap was a double-blind operation. Viktor didn't just switch two random infants. He took your child and placed him in my nursery as a biological shield, believing that if federal agents ever raided my estate, they would find a baby with matching Varric genetic markers that couldn't be easily traced to my primary registry."

Liana’s breath hitched. She looked down at the sleeping infant in the bassinet, then back at Matteo. "My baby... my Lucas... is Nico?"

"He bears our blood," Matteo said firmly, reaching out to cover her trembling hand with his large, warm palm. "And by every law of this house—and every instinct in my chest—he belongs to both of us."
