Chapter 11 - The Signature in Blood

11 - 15
The golden light of the crystal chandeliers reflected off the cold steel of Matteo’s pistol as Dr. Alistair Vance stared down at the document spread across the mahogany writing desk in the corner of the grand ballroom. The storm outside lashed against the reinforced windows with renewed fury, but inside, the only sound was the scratching of a heavy fountain pen against heavy parchment.
"Sign it, Doctor," Matteo instructed quietly, standing directly behind the trembling administrator with his hands resting casually behind his back. "And make sure your handwriting is legible. County judges in this state are notoriously picky about notary seals."
Dr. Vance’s hand shook so violently that the black ink spattered slightly against the margin of the paper. He finished signing his full name—Dr. Alistair Vance, Chief Medical Administrator, St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital—and dropped the pen as if it were burning hot.
Marco stepped forward, lifted the document, inspected the signature and the embossed hospital stamp, and handed it to Matteo.
Matteo glanced over the paper for three seconds before folding it neatly and sliding it into the breast pocket of his shirt. He looked down at the terrified doctor, whose face was beaded with nervous sweat.
"You're free to leave, Dr. Vance," Matteo said smoothly.
The doctor blinked in disbelief, snatching his briefcase off the floor. "I... I am?"
"Of course," Matteo replied, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. "You’ve provided the exact administrative correction our county records department required. However... if you ever set foot in this city again, or if a single word of this hospital swap leaks to a federal prosecutor, my men won't bother with a coroner. They'll feed you to the bay currents before you reach your car."
Dr. Vance didn't need to be told twice. He turned on his heel and bolted toward the grand double doors, practically sprinting out of the mansion and into the stormy night.
As the heavy doors slammed shut behind him, Liana stepped out from the shadows near the marble staircase, still holding Nico securely against her chest. The baby had finally fallen back asleep during the tense interrogation, his tiny breathing a steady, soothing anchor in the cavernous room.
"Is it over?" Liana asked softly, her green eyes searching Matteo’s rugged face. "Is the paper trail finally clean?"
Matteo walked across the marble floor toward her, the predatory aura evaporating instantly, replaced by a deep, unwavering tenderness. He reached out, gently stroking the baby’s dark hair before his fingers brushed against Liana’s cheek.
"It’s over," Matteo said, his voice husky with emotion. "The birth certificate is legally amended. The hospital records are sealed by federal court injunction. Nobody can ever take him from you again—or from us."
Liana leaned into his touch, letting out a long, shuddering breath of profound relief. The nightmare that had begun twenty-three days ago under gray skies beside an empty grave was finally, irrevocably dead.

"You didn't have to spare his life, you know," Liana murmured, looking up into Matteo’s dark eyes. "In your world, men who betray you usually disappear into the bay."
Matteo let out a soft, low chuckle, wrapping his free arm around her waist and pulling both mother and child against his chest. "In my world, Liana, I spent years fighting for power, territory, and bloodlines that meant nothing. But tonight, standing here with you and my son... I realized I don't need a syndicate to conquer the world. I just need to protect the only two people who ever made me feel alive."
