Chapter 12 - The Unbroken Circle

12 - 15

Two months later, the Varric estate looked entirely different. The armed patrols along the perimeter walls were still present, maintaining the discipline of a high-security compound, but the oppressive, cold atmosphere inside the mansion had vanished, replaced by the warm, chaotic, and beautiful noise of family life.

The nursery no longer looked like a museum exhibit. Colorful mobile toys hung above the carved mahogany crib—whose hollow headboard had been permanently sealed with solid wood and blessed with a fresh coat of lacquer. Stuffed animals were scattered across the plush carpet, and the sound of infant laughter echoed through the vaulted second-floor corridors every single morning.

Liana stood by the nursery window, watching the morning sunlight filter through the manicured sculpture garden below. She wore a soft, comfortable cashmere sweater instead of the red maid uniform that had marked her arrival in another lifetime.

Behind her, the door opened softly, and Matteo walked in carrying a tray with two cups of hot coffee and a small plate of pastries. He had shaved his dark stubble, wore a relaxed linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and looked more like an ordinary father than a feared mafia lord.

"You're up early," Matteo said, setting the tray down on the mahogany writing desk and walking over to wrap his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.

"I couldn't sleep," Liana admitted softly, leaning back against his chest and resting her hands over his arms. "I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, Matteo. I keep thinking this is all a dream, and that I’ll wake up under gray skies with empty arms."

Matteo turned her gently in his arms, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. His gaze was fierce, steady, and filled with an absolute, unshakeable devotion.

"Look at me, Liana," he commanded gently. "Look at your son sleeping in that crib. Look at this house, this garden, this life. It is not a dream. It is reality. And nobody on this earth has the power to take it away from us again."

Liana smiled, the last lingering shadow of her grief finally evaporating like morning mist under the summer sun. She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their past, present, and future into a single, unbreakable covenant.

From the bassinet across the room, eleven-month-old Nico stirred. He let out a happy little gurgle, blinking his large, shimmering eyes open, and stretched both tiny hands upward toward his parents as if inviting them to join his world.

Matteo broke the kiss, smiling broadly as he scooped the baby up into his strong arms, lifting him high into the air with a booming laugh that echoed off the nursery walls.

"Come here, little boss," Matteo teased, nuzzling the baby’s tummy until Nico erupted into shrieks of pure, unadulterated delight.

Liana watched them, her heart overflowing with a peace she had never thought possible. The grieving maid who had run toward a screaming baby twenty-two days ago was gone. In her place stood Liana Varric—mother, partner, and queen of a world built not on fear, but on a love so fierce it had literally rewritten destiny.
