Chapter 8 - The Price of Truth-8-

The sound of sirens was the most beautiful music I had ever heard. The police cruisers swarmed the warehouse, their lights reflecting off the wet pavement and the surrounding mountains. The tactical teams poured out, moving with a speed that left the Mercer enforcers no time to react.

I was slumped against the fence, the cold metal biting into my back, my shoulder throbbing with an intense, rhythmic pain. The darkness of the night was being chased away by the bright, harsh glare of floodlights.

I saw Arthur and his team drop their weapons, their hands raised as the SWAT team closed the distance. I didn't see Daniel. I didn't see Vivian. They were likely already gone, slipping out the back of the facility before the perimeter was fully established.

A pair of boots stopped in front of me. I looked up to see a man in a police uniform, his face obscured by the glare of the lights. "We have the perimeter secured," he said into his radio. "We have one wounded."

He knelt down beside me, his voice softening. "Ma'am? Can you hear me?"

I nodded, my vision beginning to focus. "Did... did you get them?"

"We got the men on the ground," he said, checking my shoulder. "But the Mercer family? They had a private transport waiting at the back of the valley. They're gone, Emma."

My heart sank. They had gotten away.

"But you did it," he added, pulling a small, secure tablet from his vest. "The files are live. Every network, every news site, every federal agency has the data. The Mercer name is currently being erased from every record in the country."

I felt a strange, detached sense of relief. It wasn't perfect, but it was enough.

"They'll come for me," I whispered.

"Not where we're taking you," the officer said, signaling for a medic. "You're going into protective custody. You’re the most valuable witness in the history of this state."

As they lifted me onto a stretcher, I caught a glimpse of Julian. He was sitting on the back of an ambulance, being treated for a head wound. He looked at me and nodded—a silent acknowledgment of a mission accomplished.

But as the ambulance doors closed, blocking out the light, I noticed something else in the distance, near the tree line. A car, black and silent, watching. Inside, I could see the faint silhouette of a person—not Daniel, not Vivian. Someone else. Someone who hadn't been part of the original Mercer syndicate, but who had been watching the entire spectacle from the sidelines.

The Mercer family was destroyed, but the 'Hidden Chapter' was bigger than just one family. And I had just become the only person who knew exactly who was really pulling the strings.

As the ambulance sped away, I realized that I hadn't brought down the entire organization. I had only taken out the front door. The real fight was still waiting in the dark.

And as the pain in my shoulder intensified, I closed my eyes, knowing that tomorrow wouldn't be a day of celebration. Tomorrow was the day I would have to start hunting the people who had hired the Mercers in the first place.
