Chapter 11 - The Architect of Ghosts-11-

I stood frozen in the cold, damp silence of the tunnel chamber. Richard Mercer—the man whose death had triggered the collapse of his own family—was standing in front of me, alive, breathing, and looking entirely too composed for someone who had been missing for years.
"You faked your own death," I whispered, the absurdity of it all washing over me.
"I was forced to," Richard said, walking into the light. "The 'Hidden Chapter' didn't just want my real estate; they wanted the soul of the city. When I refused to cooperate, they threatened to destroy everything I had built. I realized that the only way to save my legacy—and my family—was to make them think I was gone. But I failed. They turned my own family against me."
He looked at me, his gaze intense. "I knew you were smart, Emma. I watched you from the shadows for years. I knew you were the only one who could handle the finances without triggering the alarms. You were the perfect vessel for my work."
"You used me," I said, my voice rising. "You let me believe I was saving your family while you sat in the dark, watching me clean up your mess!"
"I had no choice!" he shouted, his calm demeanor cracking. "If I had come out, they would have killed you, Daniel, and Vivian before you could even blink. I needed the archive to be finished. I needed you to find the connections I couldn't."
I looked at Julian. He was standing back, his hand on his weapon, his expression unreadable. "Julian, did you know about this?"
"I was his primary agent," Julian said, his voice flat. "I was the one who pulled him out of the mansion the night of the 'stroke'."
My world was spinning. Everyone around me had been playing a part in a script I hadn't even known existed. "So, what now? We all hold hands and take down the syndicate?"
"We destroy them," Richard said, his eyes glittering. "But not with those files. Those files are just the surface. I have the location of their primary data center—the one that controls the entire Chapter’s financial infrastructure. If we hit that, they’ll be bankrupt and exposed by morning."
"Why didn't you hit it yourself?" I asked.
"Because it’s behind a biometric gate that requires two separate genetic markers," he said, looking at me. "Mine, and yours."
"My blood," I realized. "You were the one who hired me, weren't you? You pushed me into this marriage."
"I saw potential," Richard said. "I saw someone who could survive the Mercers and still keep their wits. I was right."
I looked at him, then at Julian. I realized that even now, even when I thought I was in control, I was still just a pawn.
"I'm not doing it," I said, backing away. "I’m not playing your game anymore."
"You don't have a choice, Emma," Richard said, his voice dropping. "The people who are hunting us? They’re right behind us."

A sound echoed through the tunnel. Not footsteps, but the heavy, mechanical whir of drones.
They had found us.
