Chapter 13 - The Trap of Innocence-13-

I stared at the microchip in the palm of my hand. The truth hit me with the force of a physical blow. Richard hadn't been the resistance; he had been the bait. The entire tunnel collapse, the drones, the sacrifice—it had all been a stage-managed performance to lead us to this specific location, at this specific time.

"He was working for them the whole time," I whispered, the weight of the realization making me feel faint.

Julian looked at the chip, his face pale. "He wasn't running from the syndicate. He was running the syndicate."

Everything made sense. The 'Hidden Chapter,' the money laundering, the 'stroke.' It was all a massive, multi-layered operation designed to test me, to refine me, and finally, to capture me. I wasn't just an accountant; I was their greatest asset.

"They don't want us dead," I said, the implications sinking in. "They want us to reveal the location of the secondary server. Richard knew I wouldn't trust him if he asked for it, so he made me think he was dying to lead me there."

"And we walked right into it," Julian said, his voice filled with frustration.

We weren't safe. We were in the middle of a city that was currently being locked down by the very people who were controlling the Mercer assets.

"We need to get to the secondary server before they do," I said, a new, cold clarity settling over me.

"The secondary server is in the middle of the naval base," Julian noted. "How are we supposed to get inside a military compound?"

"We don't go in," I said, a plan forming in my mind. "We bring the base to us."

I pulled out my phone and checked the signal. It was faint, but I could get a ping on the city's municipal fiber-optic network. If I could bridge the signal, I could access the base's internal communication system.

"I'm going to overload the base's security protocols," I said, my fingers flying over the keypad. "I'll create a massive, systemic error that forces every single security system on that base to reboot at the same time. During the reset, the internal network will be vulnerable for exactly three minutes."

"Three minutes?" Julian asked.

"It's all I need."

I typed the command, watching the screen as the override initiated. The city lights flickered, the hum of the electrical grid growing louder and more frantic. Across the city, traffic lights changed, billboards went dark, and the base’s perimeter security gates groaned as they cycled through a reset.

"Go!" I shouted.

We ran, not toward the base, but toward the municipal data center two blocks away. We broke in, bypassing the alarms, and I plugged my phone into the main terminal.

"I'm in," I whispered, watching the base’s data stream spill onto the screen.

But as I scrolled through the files, I saw something that made me scream.

It wasn't just financial records. It was a list of names. A list of every high-ranking official, every CEO, every senator who was part of the 'Hidden Chapter.'

And at the top of the list, clearly labeled 'Agent 01,' was my own name.
