Chapter 12 - THE GALA OF LIGHTS

-12-

The grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was a shimmering monument to resilience, elegance, and corporate triumph. The crystal chandeliers cascaded brilliant light across five hundred guests dressed in exquisite formal wear, their laughter and polite conversation mingling with the sweet, soaring melodies of a live chamber orchestra playing from the balcony.

At the center head table sat Ethan Vance, flanked by Marcus on his right and a smiling, tuxedo-clad Harrison Sterling on his left. Harrison had spent the last six months walking on eggshells, treating every interaction with Ethan as if he were standing on a live minefield—a healthy dose of corporate terror that had miraculously transformed him into one of the most efficient, vigilant general managers in the entire hospitality group.

"Mr. Vance," Harrison leaned in, his voice trembling slightly with polite deference as he raised his champagne flute. "I just wanted to say... the pediatric foundation donations have already crossed the five-million-dollar mark tonight. It’s an absolute honor to oversee the property hosting such a historic milestone."

Ethan raised his own glass, meeting Harrison’s nervous gaze with a calm, unreadable expression. "Thank you, Harrison. Just remember: true hospitality isn't about the chandeliers or the champagne. It’s about ensuring that everyone who walks through our doors feels seen, valued, and respected."

"Yes, sir. Absolutely, sir. Understood completely," Harrison stammered, nodding vigorously before politely excusing himself to check on the catering staff.

Marcus watched him scurry away, a quiet smirk playing on his lips. "You’ve got him trained like a prize show dog, Ethan. He’ll probably resign and become a monk if you ever frown at him again."

"I don't want him to become a monk, Marcus. I want him to do his job," Ethan replied smoothly, taking a sip of his champagne.

Across the room, near a private seating area draped in white silk, Lupita was laughing softly as she helped Lily adjust the bow on her green velvet dress, making sure everything was perfect before the little girl ran off to join a group of children playing near the dessert fountain.

The room was filled with light, music, and the quiet, undeniable hum of absolute security. The storm had passed, leaving behind a kingdom that was stronger, wiser, and more deeply anchored than it had ever been before.

As the chamber orchestra transitioned into a softer, sweeping waltz, Ethan stood up from the head table, walking gracefully across the polished parquet floor toward his daughter.

Lily saw him coming, her face lighting up with unadulterated joy as she ran over and grabbed his hand.

"Daddy! Can we dance now?" she asked eagerly.

Ethan smiled, sweeping her up into his arms and spinning her gently around the edge of the ballroom as the guests watched with warm, affectionate smiles.

"We can dance all night, sweetheart," Ethan whispered, resting his cheek against her golden hair.

He looked past her, catching the reflection of the glittering crystal chandeliers in the floor-to-ceiling windows, and beyond them, the sprawling, beautiful city of Chicago standing tall against the night. He had survived the grief, beaten the corporate raiders, and protected his home from the dark.

The crown of the Vance empire rested firmly on his head—not because of the wealth or the hotels he owned, but because of the little girl laughing in his arms.
