Chapter 10 - ECHOES IN THE LOBBY

-10-

Six months later.

The Grand Regent Hotel in Chicago was bustling with the frantic, glittering energy of the autumn social season. The massive crystal chandeliers in the grand ballroom cascaded brilliant light across a charity gala benefiting pediatric cancer research—an event sponsored entirely by the Vance Hospitality Group’s newly established charitable foundation.

Standing behind the marble reception desk in the grand lobby was Lupita Morales, wearing a tailored navy blazer with a gold supervisor pin gleaming proudly on her lapel. She smiled warmly as she checked in a group of VIP guests, her decades of quiet, dedicated service finally recognized and rewarded with the dignity she had always deserved.

The private elevator doors behind the reception desk chimed with a soft, pneumatic ding.

Lupita glanced up, expecting to see a regional manager or a housekeeping supervisor. Instead, the doors parted to reveal Ethan Vance, dressed in a timeless charcoal tuxedo, holding the hand of a seven-year-old Lily who wore a pretty green velvet dress and clutched her worn, velvet-eared stuffed rabbit under her arm.

Walking just a step behind them was Marcus Vance, carrying two light garment bags.

Lupita’s face lit up with absolute delight. She immediately stepped out from behind the reception counter, walking over with her hands clasped together.

"Mr. Vance! And little Lily! Welcome back to Chicago," Lupita greeted, her voice rich with genuine warmth.

"Hello, Lupita!" Lily chirped happily, stepping forward to give the housekeeper a quick, affectionate hug. "We came back for the party! And Daddy said I get to stay in Suite 904 again!"

"Suite 904 has been reserved exclusively for you since Tuesday, sweetheart," Lupita laughed, gently stroking Lily’s dark curls. She looked up at Ethan, her eyes shining with quiet respect. "It’s wonderful to see you again, sir. The hotel has been... remarkably peaceful lately."

"Peaceful is good, Lupita," Ethan smiled, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners. "Peaceful means the systems are working the way they were designed to."

He checked his watch. "We have a quick dinner in the private dining salon before the gala starts. Is Harrison handling the evening operations smoothly?"

"Mr. Sterling is currently overseeing the ballroom setup," Lupita reported, a tiny, mischievous twinkle in her eye. "Though I noticed he personally inspected the front desk computer system three times this morning. I think the memory of your titanium card made a lasting impression on him."

Ethan let out a low, rumbling chuckle. "Good. A little institutional memory keeps everyone honest."

He gently placed a hand on Lily’s shoulder, guiding her toward the private elevators while Marcus followed close behind with the luggage.

As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing them off from the bustling lobby, Ethan looked down at his daughter. The reflections of the glittering hotel lights danced in her wide, happy eyes, completely free of the exhaustion and sorrow that had weighed her down on that rainy night six months ago.

They had reclaimed their home, protected their legacy, and proven that true strength wasn't about shouting the loudest in a room—it was about standing firm, protecting the people you love, and letting your actions speak when the world tried to make you small.
