CHAPTER 3 — THE SYSTEM THAT WAS NEVER MEANT TO WAKE (PART 3/5)

CHAPTER 3 — THE SYSTEM THAT WAS NEVER MEANT TO WAKE (PART 3/5)

The mansion didn’t just lock down.

It sealed itself off like a breathing thing holding its breath.

Security shutters slid over the glass corridors. Doors that had always opened silently now clicked into place with mechanical finality. The Blackwood estate, for the first time in years, stopped behaving like a home and started behaving like a fortress remembering why it was built.

Lily stayed in the room.

She tried not to move.

But fear doesn’t stay still.

It crawls.

Every sound outside the door now felt coded. Every distant footstep felt like it was circling closer to her name.

Then—

a soft ping came from the tablet left on the desk.

Lily froze.

She hadn’t touched it.

It lit up again.

A single line appeared:

“ACCESS REQUEST: WHITMORE BLACK LEVEL FILE — PENDING AUTHORIZATION”

Her breath caught.

Whitmore.

That name again.

She stepped closer slowly, like the screen might bite her.

The request blinked once.

Then twice.

Then—

AUTHORIZED

The tablet unlocked itself.

Lily felt her stomach drop.

“No… no, I didn’t—”

The screen changed.

A file opened.

Not one page.

Not one document.

But layers.

Medical scans. Psychological profiles. Movement tracking logs. Financial transfers. Surveillance clips she didn’t recognize.

And then—

her own face.

But not as she was now.

Older.

Different setting.

Standing in a sterile white room.

Speaking to someone off-camera.

Lily stumbled backward.

“This is not me.”

But the video played anyway.

A voice—hers—echoed softly from the tablet.

Calm.

Controlled.

Nothing like the trembling woman in the mansion.

“I understand the assignment parameters.”

The recording continued.

“I will remain embedded until target proximity is achieved.”

Lily shook her head violently.

“No. No, that’s fake. That’s—”

Her voice cracked.

The door behind her suddenly unlocked.

Victor entered.

Fast.

One look at the screen.

And everything in him went still.

The air changed instantly.

He didn’t ask what it was.

He already knew enough to be dangerous.

“Who opened that file?” he asked.

Lily turned, panic rising.

“I swear I didn’t— it just— it activated itself— I don’t know what this is!”

Victor stepped forward.

His eyes locked on the screen.

Then on her.

Then back again.

“Only two systems can trigger that level of access,” he said quietly.

His voice sharpened.

“Me… or the embedded asset.”

Lily felt her knees weaken.

“Embedded what?”

Victor didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached for the tablet.

Paused.

Then said one sentence that dropped the room into ice:

“The Whitmore Program doesn’t hire nannies.”

Silence.

Lily’s lips parted, but nothing came out.

Victor continued.

“It builds them.”

The tablet shifted again.

A second video opened on its own.

This one showed surveillance footage.

A hospital corridor.

A woman—Lily—walking calmly with a badge that didn’t belong to any known institution.

A child in her arms.

Not Ethan.

Another child.

Different location.

Different life.

Lily grabbed the edge of the desk.

“I’ve never been there.”

Victor didn’t look away from the footage.

“You were.”

The video cut again.

Another scene.

A training facility.

White walls.

Subjects behind glass.

A voice off-screen:

“Subject L-07 shows full emotional adaptation stability.”

Lily backed away.

“No… stop… please stop showing me that…”

Victor finally looked at her fully.

And what he saw was not anger.

Not suspicion.

But something more dangerous.

Uncertainty.

Because even he couldn’t tell what was real anymore.

The system beeped again.

Another alert:

“INTRUSION DETECTED — ORIGIN: INTERNAL HOST”

Victor turned sharply.

“Someone is inside my network,” he said.

Lily shook her head, tears forming.

“I didn’t do anything— I don’t even understand any of this!”

But then—

a new voice came through the mansion intercom.

Calm.

Female.

Familiar.

Serena.

Except she wasn’t supposed to be here.

“I told you she wasn’t what she seemed.”

Victor’s expression hardened instantly.

“Where are you?”

Serena’s voice purred through the speakers.

“Oh, Victor… you still think you control your own house?”

A pause.

Then—

“I didn’t come for the boy anymore.”

Lily’s blood ran cold.

Serena continued.

“I came for the asset.”

Victor moved instantly toward the security console.

But the system flickered.

Every camera in the house shut down at once.

Total blackout.

Silence swallowed the mansion.

Then Serena spoke again, softer now.

“And she’s already activated.”

Lily stumbled backward.

“What does that mean?” she whispered.

Victor didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes were fixed on Lily now in a way that wasn’t human anymore.

It was tactical.

Calculating.

Like he was trying to decide if she was a threat inside his own walls.

Then—

a soft mechanical click echoed from somewhere deep in the mansion.

A hidden door.

Opening.

Victor’s hand moved instinctively toward his weapon.

“Stay behind me,” he ordered.

But Lily didn’t move.

Because something inside her head was splitting.

Memories that didn’t belong.

Voices she couldn’t place.

Reflexes she didn’t remember learning.

And then—

she whispered something without meaning to:

“Protocol breach detected.”

Victor froze.

Slowly turned his head.

“Lily…”

She blinked.

Like waking up inside her own body.

“What… did I just say?”

The lights in the hallway outside flickered once.

Then turned red.

Emergency system override.

And from the darkness beyond the door—

footsteps began to approach.

Not guards.

Not Victor’s men.

Someone who knew the mansion too well to be an intruder.

Serena’s voice came one last time through the system, almost amused:

“Now, Victor…”

“You’re finally going to meet the real version of your nanny.”

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

A pause.

May you like

Then—

the handle began to turn.
