CHAPTER 2 — THE HOUSE THAT STARTED TO TURN

CHAPTER 2 — THE HOUSE THAT STARTED TO TURN (PART 2/5)
The mansion didn’t feel like a home anymore.
It felt like a sealed vault.
Every door had been locked. Every guard had shifted positions. Every servant who once moved quietly through the Blackwood estate now stood like they were waiting for war orders.
Lily sat in a side room off the main hall, wrapped in a thin blanket that didn’t help the shaking in her body.
Not from cold.
From shock.
From the memory of Ethan’s arm.
From Serena’s heel.
From Victor Blackwood’s silence.
A doctor had already come and gone upstairs. Ethan was stable—but his arm was fractured, and the words “non-accidental trauma suspected” had hung in the air like poison no one wanted to swallow.
Lily kept replaying everything.
The moment she crawled.
The moment Victor walked in.
The moment Serena smiled like nothing could touch her.
And then—
The footage.
Her stomach twisted.
The door clicked open.
Lily flinched before she even looked up.
Victor entered alone.
No guards.
No entourage.
Just him.
That alone made the room feel smaller.
He didn’t sit immediately. He looked at her first, like he was measuring something invisible.
Fear? Truth? Weakness?
Then he pulled a chair opposite her and finally sat.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn’t empty.
It was pressure.
Finally, Victor broke it.
“Start from the beginning.”
Lily swallowed hard.
Her throat still hurt from screaming earlier.
“I was in the nursery wing,” she said quietly. “Ethan was with me. Serena came in—she said she wanted to take him to the garden.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“She’s never taken him alone before.”
Lily hesitated.
“She insisted. She said you approved.”
That made something flicker in Victor’s expression.
Not surprise.
Calculation.
“Continue.”
Lily forced herself to breathe.
“She took him to the foyer instead. I followed because something felt wrong. And then…” Her voice cracked. She looked down at her hands. “She changed.”
Victor didn’t interrupt.
That was worse.
He let her fall into the memory.
“She grabbed his arm too hard. He cried. I told her to stop. She… she smiled at me like I was nothing.”
Lily paused.
Then added quietly:
“And then she kicked me.”
A faint shift in Victor’s jaw.
A muscle tightening.
“Did she say anything else?”
Lily nodded.
“She said I was disposable. That no one would believe me.”
A beat.
Victor leaned back slightly.
His voice lowered.
“She was wrong.”
That one sentence made Lily look up.
Victor’s gaze stayed steady.
“But I need to know something else,” he said.
Lily felt it before he even asked.
The shift.
The deeper question.
“Why were you hired?”
Silence.
The air tightened again.
Lily’s fingers curled under the blanket.
“I answered an agency posting.”
Victor didn’t react immediately.
Then, calmly:
“There is no agency posting for my household staff.”
Lily froze.
“What?”
Victor stood.
Walked to the window.
Looked out at the grounds like the answer might be written there.
“You were placed here,” he said. “Someone approved you directly.”
Lily shook her head.
“No, I— I just applied—”
Victor turned back.
His voice was quieter now.
Controlled.
But sharper.
“Then explain how you passed a background clearance that doesn’t exist for outsiders.”
The room went still.
Lily felt something cold crawl up her spine.
“I didn’t… I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Victor studied her face for a long time.
Not judging.
Analyzing.
Then—
He said something that changed everything.
“Serena didn’t pick you randomly.”
Lily’s breath caught.
Victor continued.
“She doesn’t lose control unless she feels threatened.”
He stepped closer.
“Tell me what she thought you were.”
That question hit differently.
Not what did she do to you.
But why you specifically.
Lily shook her head again, more desperately now.
“I don’t know. I swear I don’t—”
Her voice broke.
And then—
Footsteps outside.
A knock.
A guard entered quickly.
“Sir. We found something in the nursery files.”
Victor turned instantly.
“Speak.”
The guard hesitated, then handed over a tablet.
Victor scanned it.
Once.
Twice.
Then went completely still.
Lily watched his face change for the first time.
Not anger.
Not control.
Something deeper.
Recognition.
“What is it?” she whispered.
Victor didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he turned the screen toward her.
Lily looked.
And her world tilted.
A file.
Her name.
But not her full identity.
Just fragments.
Edited records.
Redacted origins.
A flagged note:
“Potential link to Whitmore protection program — Level Black”
Lily blinked.
“What… is that?”
Victor’s eyes lifted slowly.
“You tell me.”
Her heart started pounding.
“I don’t understand that. I don’t even know what Whitmore means.”
At that name, something subtle changed again in Victor’s face.
A slight tightening.
Like a locked door inside his mind had just been touched.
He shut the tablet off.
The room went dark again.
Then he said something very quietly.
“Serena doesn’t just want my son.”
He looked at Lily.
“She wants access.”
“To what?” Lily whispered.
Victor paused.
Then:
“To you.”
Silence detonated.
Lily felt her blood go cold.
“That’s impossible,” she said quickly. “I’m nobody.”
Victor’s voice lowered.
“That’s exactly what she wants you to believe.”
Before Lily could respond, another alarm sounded through the mansion system.
A soft chime.
Followed by a security alert tone.
Victor turned sharply.
A guard radioed in.
“Sir—unauthorized access attempt on the west server room.”
Victor’s expression darkened instantly.
He moved.
Fast.
The calm was gone now.
The predator was awake.
“Lock down all systems,” he ordered. “No one moves without clearance.”
Then he looked back at Lily one last time.
“You stay here.”
Lily stood instinctively.
“I want to help—”
“No.”
The word stopped her cold.
Victor stepped closer.
And for the first time, his voice softened—but only slightly.
“If Serena was wrong about you being disposable…”
A pause.
“…then you are already inside something bigger than this house.”
He turned toward the door.
“And I need to know which side you’re on before it burns everything down.”
Then he left.
The door shut.
Lock clicked.
And Lily stood there alone.
Breathing unevenly.
The room suddenly felt like a cage again.
But not one meant to protect her.
One meant to contain her.
May you like
And somewhere deep inside the mansion—
something had just been triggered.
