CHAPTER 1 — THE MOMENT EVERYTHING BROKE

CHAPTER 1 — THE MOMENT EVERYTHING BROKE
Lily’s fingers dug into the marble floor like she could anchor herself to reality.
Her lungs burned. Her vision flickered at the edges. But the only thing real in that collapsing world was the sound of Ethan’s weakening cry.
“Please… don’t… hurt him…” cô thở đứt quãng, giọng vỡ ra giữa đau đớn.
Serena Montigue laughed softly.
Not the laugh of someone angry.
The laugh of someone certain she would never be stopped.
“You really think you matter here?” Serena tilted her head, heel still pressing into Lily’s abdomen. “Victor will marry me in three weeks. You? You’re a stain he hasn’t noticed yet.”
Ethan whimpered.
A tiny sound—fragile, broken—like something inside him was starting to shut down.
Lily forced her body forward again.
Even if it killed her.
Her fingertips brushed Ethan’s tiny sock.
Just one touch.
That was all she needed.
But Serena’s hand shot down first and grabbed Ethan’s injured arm again.
The baby screamed—sharp, unbearable.
And then—
The sound of heavy doors opening cut through the mansion like a gunshot.
Cold air rushed in.
Bootsteps.
Slow.
Controlled.
Deadly.
Serena froze for half a second.
Only half.
Because she still believed she was in control.
Lily didn’t look up. She couldn’t. If she stopped moving toward Ethan, even for a second, she feared she would lose him forever.
But she heard it.
That voice.
Low. Calm. Dangerous in a way that didn’t need shouting.
“What the hell is happening here?”
Silence exploded across the foyer.
Even Serena didn’t speak.
The footsteps stopped.
And Lily finally looked up through blurred vision.
Victor Blackwood stood in the doorway.
Black coat. Rain still dripping from his shoulders. Eyes darker than anything in the room.
The mafia boss of Chicago didn’t look surprised.
He looked still.
Like the moment had already been judged before anyone spoke.
His gaze dropped first to Ethan.
Then to Lily on the floor.
Then to Serena’s heel still pressing into Lily’s body.
And finally—
To Ethan’s arm.
Something in Victor’s expression shifted.
Not anger yet.
Something worse.
Recognition.
“Serena,” he said quietly.
Just her name.
But it cracked the air like glass.
Serena immediately changed her face—perfect, soft, innocent.
“Oh my god, Victor—thank god you’re here.” She stepped back from Lily and let Ethan drop against the floor like he was nothing. “The nanny attacked your son. I was trying to stop her.”
Lily coughed violently.
“No…” she rasped. “No, she—she hurt him—”
Victor didn’t move.
Didn’t blink.
His eyes stayed on Ethan’s twisted arm.
Then on Lily.
Then on Serena again.
And something dangerous began forming behind his silence.
Serena stepped closer, voice sweetening.
“She’s unstable. I think she’s been stealing attention from Ethan and—”
“Stop talking.”
Two words.
Not loud.
But absolute.
Serena stopped.
For the first time, uncertainty flickered in her eyes.
Victor walked forward slowly.
Each step echoed.
Not rushed. Not emotional.
Controlled.
Predatory.
He knelt beside Ethan.
The baby reached weakly—instinctively—toward him.
Victor’s hand hovered for a fraction of a second before touching him.
And when he saw the arm clearly—
Something inside him cracked.
Not visibly.
But the air changed.
Cold.
Sharper.
He looked at Lily.
“Did she do this?”
Lily tried to speak, but pain choked her voice.
Serena answered instantly.
“Yes. She lost control.”
Victor stood.
And for a moment, Lily thought he believed her.
Until his eyes moved to the security camera in the corner.
Still blinking red.
Recording.
Victor didn’t look at Serena this time.
He said one word.
“Playback.”
A guard hesitated at the door.
Victor didn’t raise his voice.
“NOW.”
The mansion obeyed.
Within seconds, the footage appeared on the screen in the hallway.
And the world stopped.
Lily saw it too.
Her own body on the floor.
Ethan crying.
Serena dragging him.
Serena’s heel striking Lily.
Serena’s voice.
Every lie collapsing in real time.
The color drained from Serena’s face.
“No—Victor, that’s not—”
But Victor didn’t look at her.
He watched.
Silently.
Unmoving.
When the video ended, the silence that followed was heavier than any gunshot.
Victor turned slowly.
His eyes landed on Serena.
And this time, there was no warmth left in them.
Only something final.
“You touched my son.”
Serena stepped back.
“No, I—Victor, I’m your fiancée—”
“You were.”
The word dropped like a coffin lid closing.
Serena froze.
Lily, still on the floor, barely breathing, watched the man she had feared from a distance her entire life become something else entirely.
Not a monster.
Not a protector.
Something colder.
Justice with no mercy left.
Victor’s voice dropped.
“Get her out of my house.”
Serena finally broke.
“You can’t do this to me—do you know who I am—”
Victor didn’t even look at her anymore.
“Remove her.”
Two guards moved in.
Serena screamed now, truly screamed, as she was dragged backward across the marble.
Her perfect image shattered in seconds.
Her voice echoed down the hallway.
“I’ll ruin you, Victor Blackwood! You’ll regret this!”
But her words faded into the distance.
And silence returned.
Victor turned back to Ethan immediately.
Then to Lily.
She flinched instinctively, expecting punishment. Expecting suspicion.
Instead—
Victor crouched again.
But this time, lower.
Closer.
His voice was quieter than before.
“Who are you?”
Lily swallowed blood and fear.
“I… I’m just the nanny.”
A long pause.
Then Victor looked at his son again.
Ethan reached for Lily this time.
Not him.
Her.
And in that tiny, broken gesture—
Victor Blackwood realized something had already changed in his house long before he walked in.
Something Serena had tried to destroy.
And something Lily had tried to protect with her body.
Victor stood slowly.
“Call the doctor,” he ordered.
Then, after a pause:
“And lock this house down.”
He looked at Lily one last time.
“You’re not leaving until I understand everything that happened here.”
And for the first time—
May you like
Lily wasn’t sure if that was a warning…
or protection.
