Chapter 9 - The Siege of Clover Hill

The headlights of half a dozen black federal SUVs carved blinding arcs through the shattered windows of the nursery as they formed a semicircle around the front lawn of the Mercer estate. Through the glass, I watched dozens of heavily armed tactical operatives disembark, their black uniforms blending seamlessly with the rainy night, their submachine guns raised toward the upper floors of the mansion.
They weren't here to make arrests. They were here to execute a clean-up operation under the guise of a federal counter-terrorism raid.
"Julian," Sarah said urgently, stepping away from the immobilized Mrs. Gable and rushing to my side at the window. "Vance has federal jurisdiction authorization signed by a corrupt magistrate. If they breach this room, they won't take us into custody. They'll classify us as hostile combatants and wipe the estate off the map."
I looked down at my three sons, who were now clinging tightly to Sarah’s jacket, their wide, terrified eyes reflecting the flashing red and blue lights outside. Then I looked at the AR-15 carbine resting against the nursery wall.
"We're not going to let them breach," I said, my voice dropping into the cold, resolute tone of a syndicate warlord preparing for his final stand.
"What are you planning, Julian?" Sarah asked, narrowing her eyes as she studied my face. "We are outgunned ten to one. We can't hold this wing against a full federal tactical assault."
"We aren't going to hold it," I replied, walking over to the walk-in closet in the corner of the nursery. I slid back the wooden paneling at the rear of the closet, revealing a heavy steel emergency hatch built directly into the exterior chimney stack. "My grandfather built this estate as a fortress with three separate escape routes. This one leads directly to the old horse stables three hundred yards down the private road, completely outside their perimeter."
Sarah stared at the dark opening, then back at me. "And you? You're not coming with us?"
"Someone has to buy you time," I said quietly, lifting the heavy iron latch of the hatch and checking the action of my carbine. "Vance came here for me and for the offshore ledgers. If he thinks I'm still trapped inside the main house, he won't commit his entire team to hunting you down in the woods."
"No," Sarah snapped, stepping directly into my path, her jaw set with an immovable stubbornness. "I didn't spend two years tracking this conspiracy just to let you play martyr, Julian. If you stay, I stay."
"Sarah, look at my boys," I urged, my voice softening as I gestured toward Leo, Toby, and Tyler. "They've already lost their mother. They cannot lose you, too. Get them to the stables, take the armored Suburban hidden in the lower stalls, and drive straight to the federal marshal's field office in Manhattan. Hand them the flash drive from my study. It contains every encrypted file Vance needs to be put away for the rest of his life."
Sarah opened her mouth to argue, but the heavy oak doors of the nursery suddenly splintered inward under the force of a breaching charge.
CRASH.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" shouted a voice from the hallway downstairs, followed by the heavy thud of boots rushing up the east wing staircase.
"Go!" I roared, grabbing Sarah by the shoulders and pushing her and the three boys through the chimney hatch.
"Julian..." Sarah choked out, tears shining in her eyes as she pulled the iron hatch door half-shut.

"Take care of my boys," I whispered, offering her a final, reassuring smile before slamming the heavy steel bolt into place from the outside.
I turned around, racked the slide of my carbine, and walked out into the center of the nursery, stepping over the shattered glass and debris just as the first tactical operative rounded the doorway with his weapon raised.
