Chapter 11 - Checkmate in the Dark

-11-
The air in the study tasted thick with drywall dust and burnt gunpowder. The amber emergency lights flickered once, twice, and then died completely, leaving the room illuminated only by the pale glow of the computer monitor casting a ghostly green light across the faces of the men holding weapons in my study.
Arthur Vance stood frozen, his hand hovering near his holster, staring down the barrel of Viktor’s grenade launcher with wide, terrified eyes. The polished, untouchable federal prosecutor had vanished, replaced by a desperate bureaucrat realizing his game of chess had just ended in a checkmate.
"Drop your weapons," Viktor commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority through the ruined room.
The four tactical operatives hesitated, looking sideways at Vance for an order. But Vance’s hands were shaking as he slowly raised them to shoulder height.
"Lower your weapons," Vance hissed to his men, his voice tight with suppressed rage. "Lower them!"
The operatives clicked their safety switches on and dropped their rifles to the parquet floor, raising their hands in surrender.
I glanced back down at the central monitor screen.
UPLOADING FILES... 100% COMPLETE.
A soft, chime-like notification echoed from the speakers as the encrypted files were successfully broadcast across secure public and private servers nationwide, landing directly in the inboxes of federal investigators, investigative journalists, and wire services.
"It's done, Arthur," I said quietly, standing up slowly from the leather chair and pushing my hands into my pockets as I walked around the desk toward him. "The ledgers, the offshore accounts, the coroner's reports, the audio logs of you and Mrs. Gable coordinating my wife's murder. It's all out there. Even if you kill me right now, the DOJ will have warrants out for your arrest before sunrise."
Vance’s face contorted into an ugly, mask-like snarl. "You think you've won, Mercer? You think the government is going to let a mobster walk away just because you leaked a few files? I'll drag you down with me. I'll make sure every asset you own is seized, every bank account frozen, and your children locked away in state custody for the rest of their lives!"
"You won't have the chance," a calm, resonant voice echoed from the doorway.
We all turned.
Standing in the shattered threshold was Director Thomas Vance—no relation to Arthur, but the head of the FBI’s Internal Affairs Division—flanked by a dozen federal marshals wearing crisp, unblemished uniforms and holding federal arrest warrants.
Arthur Vance staggered backward, his face turning the color of chalk. "Director Vance... what... what are you doing here?"
"We've been building a corruption case against your regional office for eighteen months, Arthur," Director Vance said coldly, stepping into the room and holding up a pair of polished steel handcuffs. "Agent Bennett provided the missing puzzle piece we needed this evening. Your little syndicate within the federal government has just been dismantled."
Two federal marshals stepped past Director Vance, grabbing Arthur by the shoulders and slamming him hard against the mahogany desk, snapping the cuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
As they dragged the screaming, cursing prosecutor out of the study, Director Vance paused, looking over at me with a respectful nod.
"Agent Bennett and your sons are safe, Mr. Mercer," the Director said quietly. "They reached the federal field office ten minutes ago. She asked me to give you a message."

"What is it?" I asked, my chest tightening with hope.
"She said: 'The emergency is over. You can come home now.'"
